[Listeriosis in the European brown hare in northern Germany].

During the years 1988-1997 listeriosis was detected in nine (2.4%) of 373 perished hares, in one of these cases calicivirus was additionally found. The listeriosis occurred sporadically. Granulomatous hepatosplenomegaly was the main lesion observed. Pregnancy is an important predisposing factor for the outbreak of listeriosis: six of the nine cases were hares post abortum or with retention of macerated foetuses in utero.--Six Listeria strains were serotyped and all belonged to serovar 1/2a.

[Yersinia enterocolitica serovar 2a, wb, 3:b,c biovar 5 in hares and sheep].

During the last fourty years the "hare type" of Yersinia enterocolitica was detected in the brown hare and other mammals in several European countries. In northern Germany (Province of Schleswig-Holstein) the pathogen was not found in the post mortem materials of the cattle, swine and horses during the years 1990-1996. In approximately 1,000 sheep studied this yersinia was cultured from the internal organs of one diarrhoeic lamb. The examination of some 200 perished hares reveals one animal with granulomatous splenomegaly and culture of this pathogen. Yersinia enterocolitica is one of the pathogens causing pseudotuberculosis-like lesions in the hare.

Contribution to some phenotypical characteristics of Vibrio cincinnatiensis. Studies in one strain of a diarrhoeic human patient and in two isolates from aborted bovine fetuses.

Until now, only a few strains of V. cincinnatiensis have been isolated. This study describes a further three isolates which originated in one case from a stool specimen of an immunocompromised elder patient suffering from enteritis and in two cases from the rennin stomachs of aborted bovine fetuses. These strains grew on TCBS, CIN, MacConkey and XLD plates. Their biochemical activities were dependent on NaCl concentration, in particular the formation of indole, lysine and ornithine decarboxylases, arginine dihydrolase, the reduction of nitrate and behaviour in the Voges-Proskauer test. Moreover, lysine decarboxylase and nitrate reductase were temperature-dependent. The knowledge of these hitherto unknown phenotypical characteristics may facilitate the diagnosis of the pathogen.

Lior-serotype variants in Campylobacter isolates from the same stool sample.

Campylobacter strains isolated from the same stool sample were characterised by determination of biochemical properties and both heat-labile (Lior) and heat-stable (Lauwers) serotypes. In six of 60 campylobacter-infected stools, two or three strains differing in Lior-serotype were isolated from the same stool. In four of these six cases, the isolates with different Lior-serotypes showed identical biochemical reactions and identical heat-stable antigenic patterns. A predominant Lior-serotype was not detected among them but Lauwers-antigens O:3, O:14 and O:16 were found in isolates from three of the six stool samples. Moreover, the isolates were identified as C. coli in 76.5% of the stool samples (p < 0.05). We believe that variation in heat-labile antigens occurs in vivo and might be associated particularly with certain heat-stable serotypes of C. coli.

Urinary tract infection due to a mucoid (M) form of Salmonella. A "new" transformation from M form into T1 form.

An eighty-year-old patient suffering from prostatic hypertrophy developed cystitis associated with fever, macrohematuria and significant bacteriuria. In urine cultures, growth of a mucoid (M) form of Salmonella was seen which changed into a T1 form after having been stored at room temperature or passed through U tubes. While the M form did not agglutinate in Salmonella O and H antisera, H antigens of the T1 form could be identified as l,v and 1.7. The isolate was therefore designated S.I M----T1:l,v:1.7. To date, no such M-T1 variation has been described. For diagnostic and epidemiologic purposes Salmonella M forms should be transformed into the N form or a T form (as in our case), because it is possible to demonstrate O or T and H antigens in these forms. The method of transformation and the pathogenesis of urinary excretion of salmonellae are briefly described.

Yersinia enterocolitica serovar 1,2a,3 biovar 3 in chinchillas.

Yersinia enterocolitica (serovar 1,2a, 3; biovar 3, autoagglutination test positive) was isolated in a chinchilla, in which autopsy showed the typical lesions associated with pseudotuberculosis. We assume that this "chinchilla type" of Yersinia enterocolitica still persists among stock, more than thirty years after its discovery. A brief overview of the distribution of the pathogen in Europe and North America is given.

Salmonella in snakes of the Gran Chaco, Paraguay. Description of the "new" flagellar antigen RZ72.

Twenty-three snakes of nine different species were investigated. Of these, 21 were carriers of a total of 22 different Salmonella serovars (subspecies I 14 types, subspecies IIIb 6 types, subspecies IV 2 types). A triphasic variant of S. IIIb 48:i:z:Rz72 was identified for the first time. Numerous serovars of subspecies I strains have previously been demonstrated in humans and animals in large areas of South America. It is concluded that these snakes may constitute a potential reservoir for human infections. Biochemically variant strains occurred as a lactose-positive variant of S. michigan, an indole-positive isolate of S. IIIb 61:r:z53 as well as a dulcitol-positive strain of S. IIIb 48:i:z:Rz72. The method of preparation of the specific diagnostic Rz72 factor serum for determination of this antigen is described.

Occurrence and clinical importance of the pathogenic serogroup O: 5, 27 of Yersinia enterocolitica in the Federal Republic of Germany and methods for its serological and bacteriological identification.

Despite its world-wide distribution, the pathogenic serogroup O: 5, 27 of Yersinia enterocolitica (Y. e.) has scarcely been considered in the Federal Republic of Germany. In the 1980 to 1986 period, a total of 74 strains from patients was identified at the National Reference Centre for Salmonella, Hamburg. The clinical manifestations of the cases was not different from those associated with Y. e. O: 3 and O: 9 infections. Six out of 8 patients from whom serum samples were available, developed moderate agglutination titres (1:80-1:1280). Only 8 of the 74 strains were negative in in vitro virulence tests. A list of biochemical tests is given which permit a differentiation of the pathogenic serogroup O: 5, 27 from the apathogenic Y. e. O: 5 which is widely distributed in the environment. Serological studies revealed different H antigens in both serogroups. The O antigen factor 27, and a subfactor O: 5(2) which is typical of Y. e. serogroup O: 5, are further differential markers; the production of both factor sera is described. Besides serogroups O: 3 and O: 9, Y. e. O: 5, 27 must be considered as an aetiological agent of human yersiniosis in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Immunohistology and aetiology of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis. Report of three instructive cases.

Three cases of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis are reported. Two patients came from Vietnam and the third from Greece. In all cases there was infection with yersinia enterocolitica of serogroup 9 or 3. Cervical lymph nodes were examined. Histologically, the characteristic necrosis developed in large foci of so-called T-associated plasma cells. Immunological analysis showed that these cells have characteristic markers of helper/inducer T cells, but do not express sheep erythrocyte receptors. The T-associated plasma cells perished by pyknosis and were then phagocytosed and digested by macrophages, which were present in large numbers. The necrotic areas were exclusively located in hyperplastic T regions. The B-cell system did not play a role in the reaction. T-associated plasma cells have been renamed 'plasmacytoid T cells' because they contain abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum ('plasmacytoid') and show immunological features of T cells. It appears likely that plasmacytoid T cells are the counterparts of plasma cells of the B-cell system that secrete lymphokines instead of immunoglobulin.

[Fermentation and colicinogeny for differentiation of Salmonella enteritidis (Gaertner's bacterium)].

Study material of 435 strains of Salmonella enteritidis which were predominantly cultivated from human specimens in Schleswig-Holstein in the years from 1968 to 1978, was used for investigating the biochemical differentiation by the fermentation of arabinose, dulcitol, rhamnose and glycerol (method after Kauffmann); moreover, the decarboxylation of lysine and the gas formation from glucose as well as the colicinogenicity (indicator Escherichia coli K 12 ROW) were tested. The 4 classical biotypes showed the following rates of incidence (in %): Jena 77.2; Danysz 2.3; Chaco 1.6; Essen 9.0; 9.9 per cent of all isolates did not permit classification, among them there were 19 (4.4%) strains of unknown rhamnose-negative biotypes some of which formed no gas from glucose. Four cultures (1 Jena strain, 3 Danysz strains) were LDC-negative. The colicinogenicity was identified in 20 isolates, among them 18 strains alone in a single outbreak. The analyses revealed that the fermentation properties were constant within outbreaks while the colicinogenicity may get lost in some strains within an outbreak.
