Age characteristics of blood vessels of the human heart.

71 neonatal to 81-year-old male and female human hearts were dissected and microscopically examined by means of ocular micrometry with particular regard to the thickness of the arterial walls. Both the intima and the media of the arteries thicken with age. Thickening of the intima is particularly active from the first decade of life. Our microscopic study and measurements of the thickness of the individual layers of the arterial wall have shown that in all segments of the arteries of specimens of equal age there exists a permanent proportion between the thickness of the intima and the media. Special attention was paid to the coronary arteries of newborns. By means of precise dissection and coronarography, the branching of coronary arteries, types of arterial vascularization, anastomoses and muscle bridges on arteries were studied in 100 hearts of male and female newborns taken at random. The intramural vessels were examined on special preparations. The sinusoid shows particularly clear-cut age-related changes. In older age, the venous vessels and the sinusoids are dominant, while in childhood, the capillary network and arterioles are dominant. The increase in the volume of the venous bed of the heart is in inverse proportion to the flow of blood through the coronary arteries.

Blood vessels of the human heart: coronarography and dissection.

We investigated by means of coronarography and dissection the arterial vascularization of the human heart in relation to the type of coronary ramification in 200 human hearts taken at random from males and females between 20 and 85 years of age. Examination of the selective coronarography findings was subsequently performed by means of careful dissection of the injected arteries and their branches in order to compare the results obtained with coronarographic findings in living human beings.

Superficial anastomoses of blood vessels in the human heart.

We investigated superficial interarterial, intra-arterial, arterio-venous and veno-venous anastomoses in 100 hearts from men and women taken at random who died at 20-85 years of age. By means of careful dissection and injection into the blood vessels of a differently stained 12% solution of vinilit in acetone, we studied the number and localization of the anastomoses and their appearance. Interarterial anastomoses, i.e. anastomoses between the ramification of the left and the right coronary artery, were detected in 33 hearts. Intra-arterial anastomoses, i.e. anastomoses between the ramifications of one and the same artery, were seen in 5 hearts. Arterio-venous anastomoses were found in 39 hearts. Veno-venous anostomoses were found in 49 hearts. The veno-venous anastomoses display a great many variations, being commonly the regular finding in human veins.

Contribution to the knowledge of the brain in the newborn.

On 50 brains of newborns of either sex, the exterior and interior morphology was studied. The exterior morphology of the brain was conformable to the configuration of the skull. The insula is relatively large, but extremely inadequately grooved. The subcortical masses are well pronounced but there is in general a very slight difference between the white and gray matter of the brain. The convolutions and grooves of the cerebellum are very distinctly marked, the nucleus dentatus is large and white matter is prevalent. The brain stem is rather well formed, distinctly plastic, this being particularly true for the region of the rhomboid fossa and medulla oblongata.

Vascularization of the conducting system in the human heart.

On 200 randomized specimens of the human heart, of either sex, from 20 to 80 years of age, we investigated the vascularization of the conducting system of the heart in relation to the type of coronary ramification, by the dissection, injection-corrosive, radiographic and coronarographic method. The symmetrical type of arterial vascularization was established in 24%, the right type in 63% and the left type in 13% of the cases investigated. The sinoatrial node is vascularized in 60% by the right and in 40% of the cases by the left coronary artery. The atrioventricular node and the stem of the atrioventricular bundle are vascularized by the right coronary artery in 85% of the cases investigated, in 13% by the left and in 2% by both arteries. The right fasciculus of the atrioventricular bundle is vascularized by the left artery, the left fasciculus by both arteries. The vascularization of the posterior strand in both ventricles is conformable to the type of arterial vascularization of the heart.

The appearance of the otter brain.

On ten otter brains the appearance of the exterior and interior brain structures was studied. Viewed from above there are two forms of brain, a triangular and a longitudinal one. In the triangular form the gyri are sufficiently developed with a considerable number of transient gyri and in the longitudinal form the gyri are wider and separated by considerably deep sulci. The olfactory bulbs, the olfactory tract, the gyrus olfactorius medialis and the gyrus olfactorius lateralis are less pronounced in the triangular form than in the longitudinal one. In the triangular form of the brain all gyri, except for the gyrus sylvius, are vertically positioned. The brain stem is wider in the triangular form and narrower in the longitudinal one. On the medial aspect of the brain, the cingulate gyrus, on which transient gyri are apparent, is well marked. The cingulate gyrus is slightly wider than in the longitudinal form. Below the splenium corporis callosi there is the tuberculum gyri dentati to be found by a shallow sulcus which is separated from the gyrus corporis callosi. By scaling the brain matter from outside, the pes hippocampi is exhibited. In the longitudinal form it is more sloping and separated from the base of the brain by a thin layer of brain substance. In the triangular form of the brain the cerebellum is covered by the posterior portions of the hemisphere and in the longitudinal form projects rather backward. On the frontal sections of the cerebrum the subcortical grey masses are sufficiently developed.

Appearance of the wild boar brain.

On eight brains of wild boars, the appearance of the exterior and interior brain structures was studied. The brain was preserved in the skull by formalin solution injection into the carotid artery. After having been set up for 4 months in a 5% formalin solution, the brain was removed in conjunction with the coverings. Subsequently, the brain was preserved in 5% formalin for 2 months. By careful dissection and elaboration of special preparations, the appearance of the grey and white substance of the brain, of the basal ganglia and of certain portions of the limbic system was studied. On the frontal and horizontal sections of the brain the appearance of the brain matter, of the basal ganglia and of the brain ventricles was studied. The exterior and interior morphology of the cerebellum was investigated on special preparations.

Blood vessels and excretory apparatus of the kidney in some wild animals.

On 110 preparations of the kidney in some wild animals (hare, fox, wolf, bear, boar and chamois), the blood vessels and the excretory apparatus were studied by dissection, injection-corrosion and microscope. Only the bear has a markedly split kidney, whereas the kidneys of the other animals are unsplit. In the fox there is an obvious split of the renal artery into anterior and posterior branches which supply the anterior and posterior portion, respectively, of the renal parenchyma, being separated from each other, so that we may speak of an anterior and posterior kidney. In the fox, wolf, hare and chamois the interlobar arteries pass through the renal calices in a loop composed of adipose tissue, invested by the epithelium of the renal calyx. The renculi of the bear kidney show complete autonomy in relation to the blood vessels as well as in relation to the excretory apparatus. The relation of the surface of the excretory apparatus to the whole kidney was studied. Thus we have found the fox to have relatively the largest excretory apparatus, whose surface amounts to 31% of the whole kidney. In the remainder of the animals investigated this percentage is considerably less, ranging from 21.7% (boar) to 26.7% (bear).
