Linear and curvilinear effects of inbreeding on production traits for walloon Holstein cows.

The nonlinear effects of inbreeding were studied by comparing linear and curvilinear regression models of phenotypic performances on inbreeding coefficients for production traits (milk, fat, and protein yields) of Holstein cows in their first lactation. Three different regression models (linear, quadratic, and cubic) were introduced separately into a single-trait, single-lactation, random regression test-day model. The significance of the different regression coefficients was studied based on a t-test after estimation of error variances and covariances associated with the different regression coefficients. All of the tested regression coefficients were significantly different from 0. The traditional regression coefficients of milk, fat, and protein yields on inbreeding were, respectively, -22.10, -1.10, and -0.72 kg for Holstein cows in their first lactation. However, the estimates of 305-d production losses for various classes of animals based on inbreeding coefficients showed that the effect of inbreeding was not a linear function of the percentage of inbreeding. The 305-d milk yield loss profiles attributable to inbreeding, obtained by the various regression models, were different. However, for inbreeding coefficients between 0 and 10%, these differences were small.

Rehabilitation of El Yahoudia dumping site, Tunisia.

As in all developing countries, cities in Tunisia face serious problems of environmental pollution caused mainly by the inadequate and inefficient final disposal of their generated solid wastes. The Tunisian government launched a development program including the construction of landfills in the main cities and the closure of the contaminated sites issued from solid wastes landrising practice. The project of the Henchir El Yahoudia landfill restoration is the first experience in this programme. It has been suggested to convert the site to a green park and to implement an ornamental plant nursery. The whole surface of the landfill is approximately 100 ha from which 30 ha have been already transformed to an urban recreational area and the remaining 70 ha have to be characterized for the project extension. A field investigation by boring was conducted in order to define the geological and the hydrogeological conditions, the vertical and horizontal wastes layer extension, content and degree of decomposition and the composition and quantities of leachate and landfill gas. Representative samples of waste, soil, groundwater and leachate were collected for laboratory analyses. Several of these borings were converted to piezometers to define the flow regime in the site. The results showed that the biogas (CH4, H2S, and CO2), leachate and waste, distribution in the site is mainly affected by the temporal variation of the site operating method. The underlying fissured clay layer facilitated leachate infiltration into the groundwater where high BOD, COD and nitrogen concentrations were registered.

Myocardial tracking, a new method to calculate ejection fraction with gated SPECT: validation with (201)Tl versus planar angiography.

UNLABELLED: Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and viability are essential variables for the prognosis of myocardial infarction and can be measured simultaneously by (201)Tl gated SPECT; however, most algorithms tend to underestimate LVEF. This study aimed to evaluate a new myocardial tracking algorithm, MyoTrack (MTK), for automatic LVEF calculation. METHODS: A rest/redistribution (20 min/4 h) (201)Tl gated SPECT protocol followed immediately by a (99m)Tc equilibrium radionuclide angiography (ERNA) was performed in 75 patients with history of myocardial infarction. Quality of myocardial uptake was evaluated from count statistics and automatic quantification of defect sizes and severities (CardioMatch). LVEFs were calculated both with Germano's quantitative gated SPECT (QGS) algorithm and with MTK. Briefly, the originality of this algorithm resides in the unique end-diastole segmentation, matching to a template and motion field tracking throughout the cardiac cycle. RESULTS: ERNA LVEF averaged 33% +/- 14%. QGS significantly underestimated this value at 20 min (30% +/- 13%, P < 0.001) and at 4 h (30% +/- 13%, P < 0.0001). By contrast, MTK did not miscalculate LVEF at 20 min (34% +/- 14%, probability value was not significant) though a similar underestimation occurred at 4 h (31% +/- 13%, P < 0.02). Individual differences between early and late gated SPECT values and differences between gated SPECT and ERNA values did not correlate with the extension of perfusion defects, count statistics, or heart rate. CONCLUSION: MTK algorithm accurately calculates LVEF on early/high-count images compared with ERNA [corrected], even in patients with severe perfusion defects, but tends to underestimate LVEF on delayed/low-contrast images, as other algorithms do.

[Natural infestation of Lymnaea truncatula Muller by Fasciola hepatica in the Tozeur oasis in southwest Tunisia].

Natural infestation of Lymnaea truncatula by Fasciola hepatica was studied at various sites in the traditional oasis of Tozeur 8 times between September 1997 and August 1998. Infestation of snails was documented in five of the eight sites with a mean level of 26.1 p. 100. Level of infestation varied depending on the site. It was highest in secondary irrigation canals (32.8 p. 100), seguias, (34.8 p. 100), and secondary drainage canals (34.8 p. 100). Lower levels were observed in the main drainage canal, (15.2 p. 100). Two infestation periods were noted at two sites in relation with spreading of manure by farmers in autumn and spring. Perennial infestation due to the permanent presence of animal hosts was noted at one. Infestation of drainage canals is enhanced by incoming parasite eggs from upstream irrigation canals. Infestation was age dependent reaching up to 100 p. 100 in older snails of 5.5 mm. Environmental factors such as climatic conditions and human intervention are important to sustaining snail infestation in the oasis of Tozeur.

[Ecology of Lymnaea truncatula Müller, intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica Linné in the microclimate of Tozeur (southeast of Tunisia)].

Systematic visits were carried out in the traditional Tozeur' oasis (Tunisia), in 1997/1998 in order to study the ecology of Lymnaea truncatula as well as its density in relation to habitat characteristics in the hydrographical networks of the oases. Lymnaea truncatula was enumerated on 1 m2 surface by habitat, according to the quadrat method. Samples of soil, irrigation and draining water were also analysed. The density of Lymnaea truncatula detected in autumn was constantly higher. It depends on the nature of the habitat: 54.8% in the secondary irrigation canals, 34.8% in those of draining, 7.6% in the seguia and 2.9% in the principal draining canal. Ecological factors--permanent dampness, suitable luminosity, basic pH of soil and water, temperature between 10 and 28 degrees C--contribute to the multiplicity of snails.

[Diagnostic value of the demonstration of specific antigens of Fasciola hepatica by western blot technique].

A western blot assay was performed for the detection of Fasciola hepatica specific antigens for the diagnostic of fasciolasis; 72 sera were tested, 28 coming from patients with the parasitic disease and 44 from persons either healthy or presenting other diseases; 11 different antigenic bands were detected using sera from patients with fasciolasis. The 57 and 29 kDa specific antigens are considered like major, their specificity is about 100% and their respective sensibility, 79 and 93%. Band of 9-12 kDa is also appeared specific but is revealed only in 47% of the cases; 27 out of the 28 sera from patients with fasciolasis were able to recognize at least one of the 57, 29 or 9-12 kDa specific antigens. The present results suggest that western blot could be useful for the diagnosis of this parasitic disease as far as the criteria of positivity is based on the recognition of at least one of the major specific antigens.

[The syndrome of multiple basal cell nevoid epitheliomatosis].

The syndrome of multiple basal-celled naevoid epitheliomatosis is characterized by systeme affections of the skin, the bony skeleton, the endocrine glands, the C.N.S., and the eye and its adnexa. A paraneoplastic pathology causing the cutanious lesions and tumours secreting hormones or similar substances is postulated. A long bibliography is appended.
