A baby with clinical and serological evidence of congenital varicella syndrome died 36 hours after birth. Her mother had developed clinical varicella at 12 weeks gestation. Ultrasound at 37 weeks gestation had shown poor foetal growth and a lacuna within the foetal skull. Varicella-zoster-specific IgM was demonstrated in the baby's serum.

An infant born in a complete caul survived 25 minutes of extrauterine life inside the intract sac of membranes. Up to three years later, no ill effects from this unusual birth have been demonstrated.
Chronic aspirin ingestion in childhood is not uncommon, often goes undetected, and may cause serious anaemia from occult blood loss. Five cases are described.
