[New aspects on the treatment of pneumonia associated with acute mycoplasma infections (author's transl)].

Over a period of 16 months acute mycoplasma pneumonia was diagnosed in 20 patients. All were rapidly and completely cured by ampicillin and cephalosporins, which are ineffective against mycoplasma, indicating that acute mycoplasma infection in children does not require selective treatment, the pneumonia probably being caused by other micro-organisms. There is no prove that mycoplasma pneumonia heals spontaneously, without any therapy.

Isolation of simian virus 40 from a newborn child.

Rubella virus and simina virus 40 (SV40) were isolated from a newborn child suffering from neurological and anatomical anomalies. The SV40 isolate was very similar to SV40 strain 777 by electron microscopic, biological, and immunological criteria.

[Morbus Wilson--pathogenesis, diagnosis, therapy, and course (author's transl)].

During childhood, Wilson's disease becomes manifest mostly in the hepatic form. In children every case of cirrhosis of the liver, hemolysis with high levels of conjugated bilirubin in the serum, and otherwise in explicable tremor make it imperative to exclude or confirm the existence of Wilson's disease. A false diagnosis often delays the start of therapy with d-penicillamine and low-copper diet. The prognosis, which was still fatal a few years ago, has improved considerably thanks to new therapeutic possibilities.

[Morbus wilson--progressive fatal course of the hepatic form with apoplexy and abscess of the brain (author's transl)].

The onset with a hemolytic crisis, as often described in the literature, led to the diagnosis of Wilson's disease. Treatment was immediately started in the usual way with diet and d-penicillamin. But the disease had already caused serious liver damage and renal lesions, and the patient died fourteen weeks after diagnosis. Examination of further family members disclosed a cousine with impaired liver and kidney function, also suffering from the hepatic form of homozygous Wilson's disease.

[Poliomyelitis epidemic in a district of Freiburg i. Br. in autumn 1975 (author's transl)].

In the autumn of 1975 five cases of poliomyelitis occurred within 6 weeks in German children of families of low socioeconomic class. They lived in two districts of Freiburg with close familial and occupational contacts. One child had been immunised against polio once orally several years ago and none of the others were immunised. The clinical course and results of investigations of the environment are reported. Included is the state of immunisation of 472 school beginners in Freiburg schools and the antibody levels of 284 children aged 1 to 10 years from Freiburg and the adjoining areas.

[Efficacy and tolerance of trimethoprim sulfamoxole combination in childhood (author's transl)].

CN 3123 was tested in 4 hospitals on 257 children, 218 of whom were included in the evaluation of the success of therapy. It was administered for the treatment of urinary tract infections (n = 125), bronchial infections (n = 24), intestinal infections (n = 25) and ENT infections (n = 37). The results indicated that, with a failure rate of only 7%, the drug was successfully employed. Tolerance to the medicament was good. Vomiting occurred in 7 children (2.7%) and allergic skin reactions were observed in 6 children (2.3%). A comparative study of CN 3123 and Co-trimoxazole showed the same efficacy and tolerance for both medicaments.
