[Partial canaliculus transplantation--further results].

Partial canaliculus transplantation is a suitable method of substituting the canaliculus when the nasal lower lid region has been damaged by tumor. Two cases are described, illustrating that the area of indication may be extended to substitution surgery of parts of the canaliculus next to the lacrimal sac and that, analogously to complete lid transplantation, the method can be combined with sliding plasty. During the observation period, which lasted for 17 to 20 months, the partial canaliculus transplantations followed up proved to be patent.

[A live intraocular parasite (author's transl)].

Using the first film documentation of such a case, the differential diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties in a case of live intravitreal Filaria are discussed. The visual acuity of the affected eye was unimpaired. The parasite was destroyed by systemic anthelmintic therapy. The only functional damage to the eye was that the visual field was concentrically reduced to approximately 40 degrees.

[Development of retinal vein thrombosis after argon laser photocoagulation (author's transl)].

In this paper 21 cases of branch vein thrombosis and 15 cases of central retinal vein thrombosis treated by argon laser photocoagulation are compared with an untreated control group. The visual prognosis after photocoagulation was no better in the treated group than in the control group. After central retinal vein occlusion, three cases of hemorrhagic glaucoma (20%) were observed in the control group but there was no rubeosis iridis or hemorrhagic glaucoma in the group treated by argon laser therapy.

[Partial canaliculus transplantation (author's transl)].

In some cases of palpebral tumors, causing epiphora by canalicular obstruction, surgical reconstruction of the lacrimal system is necessary . The defect of the nasal part of the lower lid is closed by transplantation of the nasal part of the upper lid of the other eye, including a part of the canaliculus. Three patients suffering from basaliomas in the region of the lower canaliculus were treated by this method. Good cosmetic and functional results were achieved.

[Rehabilitation after serious perforating eye injuries (author's transl)].

In a recent study of perforating eye injuries the authors found that in 21% there was no binocular function. To prevent complications arising from this, early fitting of hard contact lenses seems necessary. The problems of fitting contact lenses to posttraumatically aphakic eyes are discussed, with special regard to aniseikonia.

[Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of hysteric amblyopia using psychophysical and electro-ophthalmological examination methods (author's transl)].

In three patients with psychogenic amblyopia the computerized visual field, the ERG, the flash light (H-EP) and pattern reversal stimulated (M-EP) cortical potentials were recorded. Differential diagnosis between psychogenic amblyopia on the one hand, and functional amblyopia and organic lesions of the retrobulbar visual pathways on the other was shown to be possible. In the cases with organic retrobulbar lesions of visual pathways, visual field defects and pathologic H-EP's and M-EP's were found. In functional amblyopia only the M-EP responses are diminished in amplitude. In psychogenic amblyopia only the computerized visual field shows pathologic changes.

[Clinical experience in treatment of glaucoma with timolol (author's transl)].

Forty patients with primary and secondary glaucoma were treated with the beta-blocking agent Timolol for six months. We used a 0.25% or 0.5% solution twice a day. In several cases sufficient pressure regulation was achieved by means of Timolol monotherapy. If pilocarpine or acetazolamide therapy was not sufficient we used a combination therapy with Timolol.

[Frontotransversal gunshot through both orbits leading to destruction of the bulbs in a case of attempted suicide (author's transl)].

In a case of attempted suicide a frontotransversal gunshot through both orbits led to symmetrical destruction of the bulbs and orbits. Examination revealed a rupture of both bulbs, fractures of the orbital roofs and floors, and destruction of the os ethmoidale. In the frontal cortex we found focal contusions. The physical effect of the gunshot on one hand, and the special anatomical relations of the orbit on the other, explain the serious consequences of orbital gunshot damages.

[Follow-up study in patients with neuritis retrobulbaris (author's transl)].

In 11 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and eight patients in whom MS was not verified visus, computerized perimetry, bipolar flash evoked cortical potential (H-EP) and pattern-reversal evoked cortical response (M-EP) were recorded in the acute stage and convalescent period of neuritis retrobulbaris. In the acute stage visual field deficiencies, diminutions of H-EP and M-EP amplitudes and increases in H-EP latencies were seen in both eyes in all cases. The most severe pathologic changes were found in the worst eyes in the group without MS. In the convalescent period a complete restitution of the electro-ophthalmological parameters was found in neither group of patients by statistical methods. Restitution was more common in patients who were not suffering from MS.

[Experience in therapy and prophylaxis of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (author's transl)].

101 patients with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis were treated with different eye drops: cortisone, antibiotics and P.V.P.-Iodine. The treatment of 19 patients with P.V.P.-Iodine showed that inflammatory symptoms disappeared rapidly; corneal complications however such as superficial keratitis could not be prevented. After the outbreak of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, severe hygienic measures had been taken at the eye-clinic. On account of the hygienic prophylactic measures further infections could be prevented at the clinic almost completely.

[Comparative examinations in goniotrepanation and trabeculectomy (author's transl)].

In 20 patients with glaucoma simplex (15 cases) or angle closure glaucoma (5 cases) a trabeculectomy had been done on one eye and a goniotrepanation on the other eye within a period of a few days. As far as the operation-technic concerns neither ofthe two methods revealed a remarkable advantage nor a disadvantage. All patients have been controlled up to one year after the operations. There were only a few postoperative complications in both groups. There was no significant difference in the regulation of the intraocular pressure.

[The alteration of visual evoked potentials in light- and dark-adapted states as a measure for the visual field sensibility at elevated intraocular pressure (author's transl)].

On 12 voluntary subjects with normal visual function the intraocular pressure was increased dependent on the ophthalmic blood pressure Pm = (Ps + Pd)/2. The visual field was tested under this pressure load by means of a subjective method and the visual evoked potential was derived under light and dark adaptation. Comparison of subjective and objective investigations demonstrated that the different visual evoked potentials which are dependent on the state of adaptation are a measure for the pressure sensibility of prelaminar optic nerve fibers.

[Exposure of the ciliary body. A new operative method for treatment of irreversible angle closure glaucoma and aphakiaglaucoma (author's transl)].

In various forms of glaucoma with an unfavorable prognosis an operation developed by us in the Eye Clinic of the University of Graz since 1972, ciliary body exposure, has been performed. Up till now 68 such operations have been performed. In 63.2% of cases we had a good result. Technique, indications, post-operative care an complications are discussed.

[The alteration of the human ERG in light- and darkadapted state under normal and increased intraocular pressure (author's transl)].

Electroretinograms of 19 human eyes in light- and darkadapted state under normal and increased intraocular pressure (increased by a spring pressure dynamometer) were recorded (Pm = (Ps + Pd)/2). On physiological intraocular pressure the a-wave showed a low increase in amplitude after 25 min of dark adaptation, the b-wave a great one. After increasing the intraocular pressure no significant influence of the state of adaptation to the magnitude of the a- and b-wave could be found.
