[Journal impact factors in the evaluation of scientific performance].

The most known and used index of the relative citedness of scientific journals is the impact factor. It has gained a broad and growing application in the evaluation of scientific performance in the medical sciences. There are several difficulties however to be overcome in order to establish a correct and reliable method, which will be able to dispel the presently existing distrust in medical, mainly clinical circles. The authors propose a method to solve most of the contradictions. Moreover, it is aimed at complementing the bibliometric evaluation method of the Hungarian domestic publications proposed by the Medical Sciences Faculty of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1994.

[Scientific publications from 10 Central European countries in the leading foreign periodicals].

The life science publication output of ten mid-size European countries was investigated in the outstanding foreign journals of 37 disciplines. The activities corrected with the populations show differences of order magnitude. The publication activities of the late communist countries in the leading foreign scientific journals are far below the average, especially in the field of clinical medicine.

The effect of different prostaglandins on rat gastric mucosa. Scanning electronmicroscopic investigations.

According to the present investigations prostaglandins showed a specific morphologic effect on (rat) gastric mucosa. Namely: During their effect the foveolae of the mucosa have opened; - which is a convincing sign of mucus production. This phenomenon (i.e. the foveola-opening), showed a direct correlation with the cytoprotective (anti-ulcerogenic) effect of the investigated prostaglandins in the order of PG-I2 > PG-E1 > PG-F2 alpha > 6-keto-PG-F1 alpha.

The effect of different prostaglandins on gastric mucosal intracellular second messenger system in the rat.

After an oral administration of 100 micrograms/kg dose, the investigated prostaglandins: PGF2 alpha, PGE2 and a synthetic PGE2 derivative: FCE-20700, exerted a significant effect on cAMP and cGMP content of both parts (antral and fundic) of gastric mucosa, resulting in an elevated cAMP/cGMP ratio, while 6-keto-PGF1 alpha, the stable break-down product of prostacyclin, was inactive. Since the above-mentioned phenomenon seems to be proportionate to the cytoprotective (anti-ulcerogenic) property of the investigated prostaglandins, this cAMP/cGMP ratio "shift" is interpreted as a probable (molecular) sign of the reparative, (anti-ulcerogenic) processes.
