[Matrix effects from the thanatochemical viewpoint].

The predominating hydrophilic physiological body constituents are not interfering severely during the toxicological analysis for organic poisons in biological matrices, whereas coextracted lipids are usually well distinguishable from xenobiotics. But interfering substances increase strongly with autolysis, and some of them behave like toxicologically relevant compounds to be detected by the respective analytical methods. Attempts are reaching from the STAS' isolation procedure through the ptomaines to our chromatographical epoche, to phenomenologically compensate the matrix effects--increasing in the course of putrefaction--by the determination and generalisation of according analytical signals. The paper outlines on the background of Systematic Toxicological Analysis how far a systematic thanatochemical concept should be considered more closely for the futural more effective analytical elimination of such matrix effects.

[Disasters in former East Germany--experiences and problems of the Leipzig "Identification" Task Group].

Mass-disasters with high numbers of victims are a real challenge to the specialists. The role of forensic experts is generally emphasized. The missions of the Leipzig Taskgroup for identification and the experience gained during them confirm, that special training necessary staff members is. Compared with the general signs of identity, like clothing, jewelry and accessories, scars etc., the marks of ears and observations of forensic odonto-stomatology provide good chances for identification. For forensic odonto-stomatology, we developed computer programs.

[The question of the transmissibility of the results of subcutaneous tests of biomaterials from animals to humans].

The histologic estimation of the subcutaneous connective-tissue reaction at implants forms an important part of the biocompatibility test. The connective-tissue capsulae around titanium implants in man, guinea-pig, and Wistar-rat were analysed by a special test system because of the question concerning the transmission of results of animal experiments on the man. The subsidence process of the thickness of the connective-tissue capsule and of the cell count per measuring fields were represented in dependence on the time. The findings showed the fundamental similar course of wound healing in man, guinea-pig, and Wistar-rat by the influence of an implant.

[Carbon monoxide poisoning caused by medical error. Fatalities in connection with medical measures in Leipzig and Hannover].

There are significant differences in the frequency of CO intoxication and its relation to other not natural causes of death between the autopsy cases of Leipzig (DDR) and Hannover (BRD). While the percentage of all autopsies in Leipzig runs up to 7.6%, in Hannover it runs up to only 1.5%. Beside the well-known cases of not recognized CO intoxication at the autopsy with or without following intoxication of other persons, two concrete cases of not recognized CO intoxication with the survival of the victims discussed. The not noticed CO intoxication followed by the death of the victim is usually considered in medicolegal opinious as "medical malpractice". In cases of survived not noticed CO intoxications this opinion ist only supposed in special cases with longer anamnesis and a typical seasonal rythmic of symptoms.

[Determination of body height from fragments of the femur].

Presenting a major problem in connection with reconstructing the height of body from the dimensions of long or pipe bones are the circumstances under which damage is caused thereto in mass accidents such as, for example, plane crashes. Such accidents often result in long bones being fractured completely, so that it is not possible for them to be directly used for reconstructing the height of body. In such cases, use can be made of the methods described by Steel (1970) who determined segments for such long bones as the femur, tibia, and humerus and also set up formulas by use of linear regression analyses, which enable the lengths of single fragments of bones to be used for estimating the overall length of bones which can then be substituted into equations for reconstructing the height of body. The procedure has been verified statistically, and suitable formulas have been established for the femur, which is the bone that lends itself particularly well to estimations of the height of body. When using these formulas, the residual variance is generally as great as 10 cm. Accordingly, it appears inappropriate for public medicolegal officers to calculate a height of body which is beset by a range of variation that is as great as this. Therefore, the 2nd part of this paper presents a possible way of determining the stature of a human body from individual segments of the femur. The limits of these size groups have been determined for data to be recorded in identity cards and other personal documents. The method is based upon the calculation of conditional probability distributions for given lengths of segments.

[Investigations on the aging processes of the humerus by means of histomorphometry, regression and factor analysis (author's transl)].

Histomorphometric measurements were made on bone sections prepared from osseous material removed from the diaphysial center of 70 macerated humeri obtained from persons in their third to ninth decades of life. The diameters of osteons and Haversian canals, the densities of Haversian and Volkmann's canals and osteocytes, and the proportions by volume of special and interstitial lamellae were determined. The parameters were checked for age dependence and subjected, together with previously determined macroscopic dimensions of the same left humeri, to regression analyses. Influencing variables entering into the most suitable formula for age determination include the cross-sectional area of the medullary space in the diaphysial center as well as the smallest diameters of osteons and Haversian canals. Factor analysis of the complex structure of characteristics yielded 4 factors, namely, the age factor, size factor, structural factor, and nutritional factor. Also discussed are the processes of internal transformation of adult bones.

[The determination of age and sex from measure of the humerus (author's transl)].

On a total of seventy left humeri of persons in their third to ninth decades of life thirty different bone dimensions were determined macroscoically and checked for age dependence. Strong dependence on age was shown only by the weight and volume of the humerus as well as by the areal and thickness dimensins of the center of the shaft. These were used to set up multidimensional linear regression functions by which it is possible for the age of persons past thirty to be estimated with defined accuracy. Also calculated were discriminant functions which allow the sex of a person to be identified to be determined from three dimensions of the left humeral head, and these are the size of the caput at the cartilage-to-bone interface, the transverse and vertical diameters of the caput humeri or head of the humerus. Of the 49 cases studied only three were found to be in the region of overlap of the dimensions used for calculation. Consequently, the formula would not allow unknown humeri or skeletons, respectively, to be identified as belonging to either male or female persons in 6 percent of the cases only. The results of additional examinations made of 198 right humeri were less accurate and showed a decrease of the sexual dimorphism of bone with age.

[Haptoglobin-Johnson-type and evident ahaptoglobinemia in 2 families].

In two Leipzig families mark carriers of the rare Hp-Johnsontype as well as apparantly genetically associated with this hypohaptoglobinaemias were observed. Demonstration of the Hp-patterns of these mark carriers and comparison with standard Hp-patterns with the help of several methods (starch gel electrophoresis, agar gel diffusion test, immunoelectrophoresis). Short survey of the modern conception for the explanation of the genetic regulation of the Johnson-type.

[Sex differences in the human sternum].

We investigated 14 male and 14 female breast-bones of adult human beings by measuring 2 parameters of length, 2 of breadth and 2 of thickness and estimated their frequency distributions. They overlap more or less. Therefore we made a discriminant analysis in order to differentiate male and female skeletons by means of a-l 6 measures of the breast-bone. The result was satisfying. The received discriminant function may be used in the sex diagnosis in forensic osteology, especially, if the more reliable criterions of the pelvic measures are missing.
