The effect of intravenous hyperalimentation (IVH) on cell mediated immunity was examined in 22 patients. Each patient received PHA and PPD skin tests before and after the performance of IVH. In this study both PHA and PPD skin reactivity showed significant increase after IVH, and serum albumin levels had positive correlation with the PPD skin reaction changes. Absence of the established delayed hypersensitivity in the surgical patient, especially those with malignant diseases, is probably secondary to generalized malnutrition, and established cell mediated immunity can be restored by proper nutritional repletion.

CS-1170 was administered in a total of 11 cases including respiratory infections, urinary-tract infections, and subacute bacterial endocarditis. It was effective in all of the cases; markedly effective in a case of bronchopneumonia with underlying Down's syndrome and infantile spasm and in 2 cases of urinary-tract infections with E. coli. The fact that it was effective for urinary-tract infection with E. coli which showed no sensitivity to ampicillin or cefazolin demonstrates the clinical significance and usefulness of CS-1170 which is said to have a strong antibacterial activity for bacterial producing beta-lactamase. No side effect was observed.
Cefuroxime, a new cephalosporin C antibiotic, was administered to 15 children with respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, or subcutaneous tumour. The following results were obtained. 1) CXM 30 approximately 100 mg/kg/day were used in treatment of respiratory tract infection. Eight of the eleven patients treated responded to the therapy. 2) CXM 45 approximately 75 mg/kg/day were given to 3 patients with urinary tract infection. Excellent results were obtained in all these cases. 3) One patient with subcutaneous tumour responded to CXM therapy. 4) Clinical isolates from the foci involved, i.e., Staphylococcus aureus (4 strains), Group A Streptococcus hemolyticus (1 strain), Streptococcus pneumoniae (1 strain), Haemophilus influenzae (1 strain), and Escherichia coli (3 strains) were all eliminated by CXM therapy except 2 unassessable strains. 5) No noteworthy side effect was noted.

We measured the immunoglobulin, beta1 C globulin, beta1E globulin, C3a, and CH50 in 20 patients with anaphylactoid purpura (Schönlein-Henoch purpura). IgA values proved to be elevated in 5 out of 11 cases. beta1 C globulin values were lower in 2 out of 8 cases and fell within the range of normalcy in the remaining 6 cases. beta1 E globulin values were normal in all cases measured (5 patients). A 130% increase in C3a was found in 7 out of 9 cases; patients with higher C3a values suffered from lasting petechial hemorrhages. It can, therefore, be concluded that the activation of the "alternative pathway" induced by IgA led to the release of C3a.
For the purpose of predicting the effect of carcinostatic agents on tumor-bearing host in vitro, a sensitivity test of a drug in tumor bearers was developed. This test is based on the change in the specific activity of acid phosphatase of individual tumor and liver tissue, and the difference in them was used as an indicator of effectiveness. The value was called the "effective value." The present papar is concerned with the relationship between the effective value and effectiveness of the agents in rodents and man. The results showed that the effective value became higher with increasing concentration of Mitomycin-C incubated with tumor and liver tissues. The survival time of Ehrlich carcinoma-bearing mice, which were given Mitomycin-C intraperitoneally, was longer and increase in the dose of Mitomycin-C. In ascitic or subcutaneous form of Ehrlich carcinoma, AH-130, and Yoshida sarcoma, the effective value was parallel with the survival time of or the inhibition of tumor growth in tumor-bearing animals treated with Mitomycin-C. In 25 patients with gastric carcinoma treated with Mitomycin-C, the postoperative survival time was more closely correlated with the effective value calculated by the titers of both tumor and liver than the value of tumor alone.
