[Study on the effectiveness of the "Berlin Letters for Seniors (author's transl)].

The effectiveness of the "Berlin Letters for Seniors" (LFS) will be tested by a longitudinal study. Two Measurement Points (MP) are scheduled: 1976 and 1978. The total sample (N = 3000) comprehends two subsamples of receivers and non-receivers. Data were/will be collected by a questionnaire. A preliminary analysis of the MP I data shows that the two subsamples are comparable as to demographic variables and relevant attitudes; so they may serve as experimental versus control group. An examination of what the readers' concept of the LFS was like, proved that though reservation was recognizable approval prevails.

[Attitude toward and experience of finiteness of human life].

Consciousness of the finitude of human life is found to occur in childhood as well as in age and adulthood, but is turning up more intensively in subjects being terminally ill, and is aroused -- as an irritation to be repressed -- in persons who regularly contact patients confronted by death. Thinking of the end is embedded in a complexity of psychosocial correlates: this is shown to be true for two subgroups of the Bonn Longitudinal Study of Aging, who are discriminated by their contrasting manner of facing finitude.

[Different life-space structures: different styles of aging].

By using life space data, among the participants of the Bonn Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA) two groups were selected, sample A consisting of subjects that perceived only few, sample B of subjects that perceived many changes and many symptoms of aging.--The two groups reached the same scores in mental tests, but these scores and the life space data correlated positively in sample A, yet negatively in sample B. By nine behavior ratings group A was characterized as being more balanced than group B as to control and mood. By six categories group A was described as experiencing more satisfaction, group B as suffering more stress. In nine social roles group A showed more activity and more satisfaction than did group B.--These findings were interpreted, in the framework of a theory of self-regulation, as examples of different patterns of coping with developmental tasks.

[Experiencing the finality of one's situation: biographical aspects].

In the sample of 81 survivors of the Bonn Longitudinal Study of Aging a relationship is shown to exist between the coping style of facing the definitude of human life and some other variables which represent the experience of being fixed to certain possibilities and of being reduced in one's possibilities to manipulate one's own life. This relationship is found to change significantly from measurement point to measurement point. The findings are interpreted in the framework of a cognitive theory of personality.
