Quantitation and estimation of cooperation between target-binding sites in natural and antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity by use of a mathematical transformation. Influence of interferon.

We have studied the use of a mathematical transformation, the Hill transformation, in natural and antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity as a function of effector cell concentration. It can be concluded that when adherent cells are removed from the effector cell suspension, cooperation between binding sites for effector cells on the target cell changes from negative to zero. After stimulation of nonadherent cells with alpha-interferon, the binding sites still remain noninteracting. This is the case both in natural and in antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity experiments. The Hill transformation seems to be an easy and easily reproducible way of quantitating cytotoxicity.

[Plasmapheresis. A review (author's transl)].

In the light of a review of the literature the possible lesions due to plasmapheresis reported by individual authors are pointed out, the individual protein groups being given particular attention. The effect of plasmapheresis on the platelet count and the danger of pneumatic ischemia is discussed. The possibilities of establishing plasmapheresis in Germany, except for therapeutic measures, are pointed out. Finally, our own current observations on the application of plasmapheresis are presented.

[Microfilters and blood transfusion].

The use of microfilters for the transfusion of fresh blood and bank blood stored for 10 and 18 days is reported. No amorphous debris are found in the microfilter after perfusion of fresh blood. After perfusion of blood stored for 10 and 18 days, in two cases aggregates of platelets are found, amorphous debris, however, only in one case in the smallest mesh. On the other hand, in the 300 mu standard filter a passage of amorphous debris through the filter is often to be seen. It is possible that some manipulation has favoured this.
