Fulminant psittacosis.

Two patients died of psittacosis after presenting with generalised toxaemia, acute renal failure, and evidence of pancreatitis. Death was attributed to the virulence of the chlamydial strain and the delay in antemortem diagnosis. In one case Chlamydia psittaci was isolated from necropsy lung tissue. A third case of psittacosis suggested person-to-person or fomite spread, which is rarely reported. Infection was acquired from an apparently healthy, imported and quarantined cockatiel. Import restrictions on psittacines should thus be tightened and psittacosis should be made a notifiable disease.

Genital herpesvirus infection in women attending a venereal diseases clinic.

Routine cervical viral cultures (and cultures from lesions if present) were performed on 2630 female patients attending a venereal diseases clinic over a period of four years. Of these patients 96 (3.7%) had genital herpetic infection; of these 23 (24%) were asymptomatic. The association of herpesvirus with other genital infections is considered, but no increase in the incidence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, and genital warts was found; there was an increased incidence of Candida albicans. A significantly higher percentage of the patients with herpesvirus took oral contraceptives. The findings are discussed and compared with previous reports.

A controlled trial of inactivated monovalent influenza A vaccines in general practice.

A trial of influenza A vaccines in general practice is described. Five hundred and seven subjects were vaccinated with either inactivated monovalent A/Hong Kong vaccine, A/England vaccine or influenza B vaccine as control. Local reactions were noted in 24% and general reactions in 12% of patients. Antibody titres in serum were measured by haemagglutination inhibition (HI) and complement fixation (CF) tests in 465 subjects. The influenza vaccines produced substantial increases in both homologous and heterologous antibodies as measured by the HI test and a comparatively poor response as measured by the CF test. Although clinical influenza was confirmed in only a few cases, there was serological evidence of significant subclinical infection in the control group.

Rubella vaccination and termination of pregnancy.

Six terminations of pregnancy have been carried out in Leicestershire since February 1970 because of rubella vaccine administered inadvertently during early unrecognized pregnancy. Any woman of child bearing age shown by serological tests to be susceptible to rubella should be offered vaccination, preceded and followed by adequate contraception.
