[Are animal experiments and clinical prevention of abnormalities possible?].

A important problem of the experimental teratology is the prevention of malformations. In this article first results are published of clinical prevention of clefts in hereditary burden families. Moreover described the present situation of the own experimental-teratological observations. The author found a new protective function against malformations by the nootropicum centrophenoxine.

[The effect of meclofenoxate on the growth, fertility and number of offspring in Wistar rats].

In experiments with rats concerning teratological aspects of meclofenoxate it was demonstrated that this drug reduces the teratogenicity in Wistar rats. Meclofenoxate leads in the fetuses of rats to a significant increase of the weight when the dams were treated prenatally with the ester. Besides, meclofenoxate causes in continuous series of generations an increase of fertility which results in a higher number of offsprings.

[Circadian rhythm studies on the prenatal toxic effect of cyclophosphamide and centrophenoxine in Wistar rats].

According to the literature, centrophenoxine weakens the teratogenic effect of cyclophosphamide. Circadianrhythmic examinations were carried out on Wistar-rats at 4 different times daily during embryogenesis. The spectrum of deformities induced by cyclophosphamide showed significant differences according to the stage of development and the time of day. The protective effect of centrophenoxine has been demonstrated, but its ability to do so also showed daytime fluctuations. The most remarkable effect was obtained 14 d post coitum at one in the morning. The importance of circadianrhythmic examinations in experimental work is therefore stressed, and should be given some more attention.

[Relations between sperm findings and fertility prognosis in childless couples].

In eight andrological centres more than 2,000 childless married men were examined catamnestically. Fertility was compared with the findings of the routine spermatograms. Conception rate is reduced significantly if sperm density is below 10 million, in motility of spermatozoa under 50% and in ejaculates with less than 60% normal-shaped spermatozoa. However, lower values of spermatozoa must not be compared with absolute infertility.

[Influence of prenatal applicated centrophenoxine on the postnatal increase in weight of the Wistar rats (author's transl)].

It is found in the literature, that Centrophenoxine, an ester of Dimethylaminoethanol and p-Chlorphenoxyacetate, has a great influence on the increase in weight of embryos of Wistar-rats. In the light of the present researches on animals it is tested, if this adequate substance transformation effect of Centrophenoxine has a long lasting influence on the postnatal life, whereby the weight is considered as a parameter. Centrophenoxine was applied on the animals under test from 11-14 d post coitum that is during the time of embryogenesis. The test lasted over 5 generations. The animals were divided into 2 groups: In the first group Centrophenoxine was given to the first generation and the second to fifth generation of animals were paired each other; while in the other group each generation received this Centrophenoxine at the same time before birth. The weights of the young animals were taken at definite intervals and compared with that of the untreated control-animals as well as among themselves. The weight differences in the individual weighting times between the control and test groups were inconsiderable and were significant only in few cases. The results showed that Centrophenoxine applied prenatal has lost its weight increasing influence in the postnatal life. The reasons are discussed.

[Etiology and rehabilitation of lip, jaw, palate and velum clefts].

The heredity rate among the patients treated by the authors (527 cases) was 14.4 percent. Most of the schistases were caused by exogenic noxae. Of 271 children affected, 83.1 percent entered school at the normal age and 14.7 percent later, whereas 2.2 percent were found not educable. A total of 88.5 percent went to ordinary schools and 9.2 percent to special schools. At the elementary stage 10 children (6.1 percent) had to repeat a year once. The most important task in rehabilitation is the full social integration of patients, and special attention must be devoted to the early recognition of developmental disturbances and their treatment through specific advancement measures.
