I devised a malleable plastic-coated wireform drape-retractor that increases patient comfort during surgery by keeping drapes off the nose and mouth. It is small and does not interfere with the surgeon's hand movements.
An operating room demagnetizer that utilized a pulsed, smoothly decaying oscillating magnetic field is described. The instrument can demagnetize a number of surgical instruments at one time and can provide instantaneous and complete demagnetization.
Capsular fragment forceps were designed especially for small-incision microsurgery. The blades were fashioned in a bayonet design so that capsular material may be grasped by the tip of the forceps while iris is not pinched by the heel of the forceps.
A solely mechanical foot-pedal operated valve for control of intraocular irrigation provided independence from an assistant and allowed accurate adjustment of flow. It was particularly useful during cataract aspiration, vitreous cutting, and intraocular lens implantation.
