[Use of computers in radiology. Word processing, office technology and documentation--continuing the past or using newer technology?].

The use of computers can result in drastic rationalisation in radiology with regard to text processing, office automation and documentation. The staff can be streamlined and work can be processed more rapidly, easier and more reliably, thus essentially improving effective productivity levels. Basing on the experience collected in handling the COMRAD system. Where the textrail is the most important software component, the article explains by means of the example of three different types of reports how the radiologist is assisted in his work by the computer.

[Computers in radiology. Adjustment to new competitive situations through use of computers with user-specific software].

With this publication, the author presents the requirements that a user specific software should fulfill to reach an effective practice rationalisation through computer usage and the hardware configuration necessary as basic equipment. This should make it more difficult in the future for sales representatives to sell radiologists unusable computer systems. Furthermore, questions shall be answered that were asked by computer interested radiologists during the system presentation. On the one hand there still exists a prejudice against programmes of standard texts and on the other side undefined fears, that handling a computer is to difficult and that one has to learn a computer language first to be able to work with computers. Finally, it is pointed out, the real competitive advantages can be obtained through computer usage.

[X-ray findings: must they remain the stepchild of radiology?].

The COMRAD system elevates the quality and performance level of the typing department to the high technical level of the radiological examination equipment, since the machines employed are of high technical perfection. Thanks to the present-day developmental stage of microelectronics and the development of a user-specific software for radiologists, it becomes possible for the first time to print out the physician's report automatically via the computer, requiring merely the x-ray diagnosis as input data. This saves both the radiologist and the typist about 90% of their time. The findings are printed out as a continuous text which is strictly separated according to textual description and evaluation. The case accuracy of the findings is guaranteed by means of attributes built into the basic data sets of x-ray film evidence.

[The computer in radiology--medical letter generation and practice management with COMRAD].

One year after introduction of the COMRAD EDP system of text processing to the radiological practice of the author, the advantages resulting for the physician and medical staff as well as for the transferring physician and their patients are presented and the economic efficiency is determined. The high capacity of COMRAD including the automatic text processing for a complete computer aided administration of medical practice and the accounting department, is based on the advanced technological development of microelectronics and combined with a user specific software. The hardware equipment enables multiprogram processing, data processing in on-line operation as well as short access-time of stored data, due to the rapid tracertechnology of the computer. The software equipment, with text processing and a medical practice administration system, permits the regular workload to be handled efficiently and reliable. The main issue is text processing using a text rail. An integrated part of the result output is the performance capacity enabling automatic settlement of accounts with health insurance agencies and privately insured patients. Statistical evaluation, for instance the daily performance efficiency of the practice can be recalled any time. An accounting system accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and general accounting supplements the software package enabling a computer aided handling of all administrative tasks required in a radiological practice.

[The computer in radiology. findings obtained by the text rail].

As a dedicated solution for professional classification, the COMRAD (COMputer in RADiology) system makes available a "dialog system" that enables the fully integrated processing of operational layouts or word processing and administration of medical practice. The dialog system is based on data files which enable direct access to all stored data as well as the storage of new data, thus avoiding a multiple input and storage. The operational layout of text processing which is to be introduced by this paper, permits radiological findings to be prepared in a flow text, strictly observing a division of the analysis into a descriptive and a evaluative report. The synthesis of the findings is reached through a dialed description of a pathological condition, which is automatically supplemented for assessment by the pertinent evaluation text including its variables. In contrary of assembling text modules the texts of all not directly dialed findings without pathological changes are automatically incorporated both into the description and into the assessment. The variables may be standard attributes, free attributes and pairing attributes.
