[The treatment of heart infarct in comparison: attempt at quality control].

Treatment of patients with acute coronary artery disease in a medium-sized hospital (with multidisciplinary intensive care unit) is compared with treatment in a university hospital. Two groups of 68 patients (under 70 years of age, without preexisting infarction) are comparable in history, physical findings, infarct size and localization, and complications. Quality or care is assessed on the basis of the findings at discharge and the length of hospital stay. We conclude that the quality of care in a medium-sized community hospital (in collaboration with the university hospital) is satisfactory.

[Cyanide poisoning].

Acute cyanide poisoning is a rare but usually fatal intoxication. Rapid diagnosis and immediate initiation of therapy are important, since a number of effective and potentially life-saving antidotes are available. Pathophysiology, signs, symptoms, course and therapy are discussed, and three personal observations are presented.

Present problems of food colours.

Food colours belong to those food additives which have been most carefully evaluated toxicologically. The colours which are accepted today by international bodies, like the FAO/WHO and Codex Alimentarius, offer an extraordinary high degree of safety. Within these toxicologically accepted colours, the group of colours which naturally occur in foods (for long periods of time) deserves special attention: such colours combine in an ideal way a very long practical human experience with scientific examination under experimental and animal test conditions, and they offer, therefore, a maximum degree of safety. Colours which naturally occur in foods and which are also of industrial importance are: caramel, carotenoids, grape skin extracts and some colouring spices.
