The nature of pleural-based thoracic collections may be sonographically confusing. To help lessen this confusion, the fluid bronchogram, a useful sonographic sign of pulmonary parenchymal consolidation, is described. Bronchi containing fluid in consolidated lung can be identified using ultrasound.

Real-time ultrasonography was used to evaluate three pediatric patients with biopsy-proven intestinal lymphangiectasia. The sonographic findings were ascites, diffuse bowel wall thickening, mesenteric edema, dilated mesenteric lymphatics, and thickened walls of the gallbladder and urinary bladder. Recognition of the sonographic pattern of intestinal lymphangiectasia is useful since ultrasonography is often the first imaging examination performed in children with abdominal disorders.
Lower extremity arterial insufficiency, a relatively common complication of ergotamine ingestion, is a rare complication of methysergide therapy for migraine headaches. Methysergide causes one of two typical angiographic patterns: intra-abdominal extrinsic compression of the aorto-iliac vessels in patients with retroperitoneal fibrosis, or marked diffuse bilateral spasm of the superficial femoral arteries in those without retroperitoneal fibrosis. We report a patient with methysergide-induced bilateral lower extremity arterial spasm and review the relevant literature. When one of the above arteriographic patterns is recognized, methysergide ingestion should be considered as a possible etiology.

The diagnosis of spontaneous stress fractures of the femoral neck, a form of insufficiency stress fracture, can be missed easily. Patients present with unremitting hip pain without a history of significant trauma or unusual increase in daily activity. The initial radiographic features include osteoporosis, minor alterations of trabecular alignment, minimal extracortical or endosteal reaction, and lucent fracture lines. Initial scintigraphic examinations performed in three of four patients showed focal increased radionuclide uptake in two and no focal abnormality in one. Emphasis is placed on the paucity of early findings. Evaluation of patients with persistent hip pain requires a high degree of clinical suspicion and close follow-up; the sequelae of undetected spontaneous fractures are subcapital fracture with displacement, angular deformity, and avascular necrosis of the femoral head.

Thirteen patients with pathologically proven gangliogliomas were studied radiographically. The computed tomographic (CT) features of these 13 lesions and the other 35 cases in the literature were analyzed. Although the CT appearance of gangliogliomas was varied, certain characteristics were noted. The most common location was in the cerebral hemispheres, most often the temporal lobe. At least part of the tumor was low density in 71% of the unenhanced CT examinations. There were focal calcifications in 35% and enhancement with contrast material in 50%.
