The role of the transference in the Wolf Man case.

The Wolf Man case offers the last detailed record of Freud's work and his appraisal of the therapeutic vectors in analysis, including the transference. The Wolf Man, Sergius Pankejeff, died on May 7, 1979 in Vienna in a municipal institution at the age of 92. Kurt Eissler (1980) reported in the International Journal of Psycho-Analysis that although his mental faculties were in a decline, his last two years of life were peaceful (pp. 104-105). This essay has attempted to demonstrate that Freud's therapeutic emphases in 1914 were centered on memory revival sufficient to allow for reconstruction to be made that would explain the neurotic conflicts. The transference was in fact viewed as a facilitator in the revival of the significant childhood memories.

The Jew in literature: the hated self.

This paper discusses the special psychological and sociological qualities of the Jew in the literature of novels, plays and short stories. From Shakespeare to Hemingway, the Jew has been assigned a special place in the psyche of the authors here described, reflecting the ongoing cultural bias as it became internalized in the selves of the authors quoted. The Jew of Shakespeare's "Shylock" reflects the 16th century bias of Shakespeare and is at a distance--although with interesting similarities--to the Jew of Hemingway. Two psychological facets of anti-Semitism in literature are primarily discussed: the group-self perception of the Jew as stereotype persona, identified over time with specific peculiarities, and the psychological perceptions (in the quoted literature) to the internalized group-percept.

Working through: a cornerstone of psychotherapy.

The concept of working through, initially addressed by Freud in 1914, and elaborated upon over the past seventy years, remains controversial. Theoretical elaborations of this concept are reviewed and the central role of working through in the psychotherapeutic process is emphasized. Methods for evaluating working through are also suggested.

The fate of the clinical interview: an observational study.

To highlight differences between data observed in patient interviews conducted by medical students and reports of these data in supervision, the authors compared the number of themes in 26 videotaped interviews with those reported by the students in supervision. They found that 54% of the themes of the videotaped interviews were not reported in supervision; 42% of the themes were reported. Some degree of distortion was present in 14 (54%) of the interviews; 6% (N = 37) of the themes identified were distorted. The authors conclude that the training of students in psychiatry must include careful attention to observation of the manifest details of the actual patient interview conducted by the student.

Transference in the rat man case: the transference in transition.

This study has concentrated on the use of the transference concept in the Rat Man case as a method for revealing repressed memories and to gain conviction about these repressed memories. In this treatment-transference model, transference interpretations focusing on the analyst are not germane, since the transferences are merely the vehicle by which memories are uncovered. Thus, Freud's transference work in 1907 revealed a transitional phase of his clinical activity soon to be supplanted by later insights into the curative aspects of transference analysis.
