Appendicitis complicating pregnancy.
The charts of 24 pregnant women subjected to laparotomy for acute appendicitis are reviewed. The correct diagnosis was made preoperatively in 19 (79%). Complications were predominantly associated with perforation of the appendix in the third trimester. Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are stressed. Improved perinatal care allows more aggressive management in acute appendicitis complicating late pregnancy.
