Gingival fluid and tissues around successful titanium and ceramic implants. A comparative clinical, laboratory, and morphologic study.

The gingival tissue reactions around 19 titanium implants (Brånemark System) and 6 ceramic implants (Frialit) were studied by using established variables for monitoring periodontal status. Natural teeth in the same or the opposite jaw served as controls. Both clinical and laboratory examinations showed healthy gingival status. No differences in soft-tissue reactions between the two types of implant or between the implants and the natural teeth were registered.

Transplantation and implantation procedures after surgical treatment of ameloblastoma.

Attention is called to the fact that in cases of large ameloblastomas systematic, careful treatment is essential. This implies proper reconstruction of the jaw and restoration of the occlusion after adequate extirpation of the tumor. A case involving a large mandibular ameloblastoma is reported. It was successfully treated, step by step, by tumor extirpation, jaw reconstruction with rib transplants and installation of titanium implants (Biotes) in the rib transplants, anterior vestibuloplasty with skin graft, and, finally, an overdenture. Carefully planned coordination of well-documented surgical and prosthetic procedures has achieved a functionally and esthetically successful result.

Ameloblastoma

The tissue-integrated prosthesis in the treatment of edentulous patients. A follow-up study.

This paper reports the results of clinical series of osseointegrated implants (BiotesTM) at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. From 1980 to 1985, 350 implants were installed in 68 upper jaws and 440 implants in 83 lower jaws. After observation periods of 1 to 6 years, 307 (88%) maxillary implants and 434 (99%) mandibular implants were fully functional. Of 128 bridges and 23 overdentures 124 (97%) and 21 (91%) respectively were in function at the end of the observation time. The most frequent tissue complications were fistulae (8 cases) and mucosal hyperplasia adjacent to abutments (11 cases). The most frequent prosthetic complications were phonetic problems in the maxilla only (10 cases), acrylic fractures in bridges (3 cases) and fractures or distortion of the metallic framework (2 cases). The results indicated that treatment with osseointegrated implants (BiotesTM) is a safe method with predictable long-term prognosis for rehabilitation of the edentulous patient.

Oral recognition of forms and oral muscular coordination ability. A longitudinal study in young adults.

A study has been carried out to investigate the constancy of results in oral recognition of forms (RF-test) and in tests which demand a fine coordination of the oral muscular apparatus (MA-test). Twenty examinees with a mean age of 22.5 years were tested with both test forms in 1972 and retested 4 years later in 1976. The performances in the RF- as well as in the MA-test improved considerably. As to the learning (training) effect in both test forms, the test results acquired by training during the previous period have largely been preserved until the next test period 4 years later. Individuals with a given capacity to perform either the RF- or MA-test, showed about the same grade of ability 4 years later. The RF- as well as the MA-test seem to reflect a given ability, which, at least in this age-group, remained constant during a period of 4 years. These results may be explained by reference to the notion of schema in which some motor-sensory feed-back will be stored. The specificity of the perceptual and motor patterns used, may have produced schemata with good resistance against forgetting.

Adult

[The reproducibility of bite registrations].

The results indicate that the reproducibility of the hinge axis of mandibular movement with an accuracy of less than a few millimeters is almost impossible. The results also show that a facebow constructed on the basis of the average measurements is adequate for the general dental practice.

Dental Articulators

[A general roentgenographic procedure with high reliability and minimum radiation exposure].

Needs for exposure procedures in dental radiography with improved reliability and radiation hygiene, that can be applied with a minimum of time, have been documented. This publication presents a systematic approach to reliable dental radiography using beam guiding instruments which may meet such requirements. It can provide accurate radiographs in endodontic, periodontic and general practice and is adaptable to more time consuming special purpose radiography, including "serial identical" exposures and exposures of handicapped or anaesthetized patients.
