[Determination of cefoxitin serum and tissue levels. Perioperative antibiotic prevention in hand surgery in interventions in a bloodless field].

In 63 patients, who underwent handsurgery under tourniquet ischemia, 2 g of Cefoxitin were given i.v. The antibiotic levels in tissue and serum at different times were obtained using biological assay. The results area compared with cefoxitin-concentrations of samples from abdominal surgery. By means of regression-analysis the tissue-serumquotient is defined as the relation of function to the time. The model-character of the conditions unter tourniquet ischemia is described.

[Simultaneous monitoring of skin, sublingual, esophageal and rectal temperature of intubated patients in an air conditioned operating room. A comparison of methods].

The body temperature of 36 patients of ages 20-83 years, who were undergoing abdominal and extra-abdominal surgery, was measured oesophageally, sublingually, rectally and on the skin during a period of 2 h. The question behind this was: how far can the changes in deep body temperature (represented by the oesophageal temperature) be assessed by methods other than those applied oesophageally. The body temperature sank statistically distinctly, continually and, depending on the chosen method of measuring, by an average of 1.12 degrees C (oesophageal and rectal), 0.99 degrees C (sublingual) and 0.78 degrees C (skin) respectively. The sublingual temperature proved to be the best assessor of deep body temperature. With its help, 91.6% of the variance of oesophageal temperature in the mean was explainable.

[Expression of genes of potential importance in the response to chemotherapy in osteosarcoma patients].

BACKGROUND: The prognosis of patients with osteosarcoma has considerably improved over the last 30 years, mainly due to developments in chemotherapy. However, almost half of the osteosarcomas do not respond to chemotherapy. Predictive markers for chemosensitivity at diagnosis are desirable. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In order to investigate the potential of some chemotherapy-associated genes with respect to their predictive value for chemosensitivity, the mRNA expression of 8 genes was evaluated in the osteosarcomas of 45 patients and correlated to the histological response to neoadiuvant chemotherapy. RESULTS: ERCC4, a member of the nucleotide excision repair system, showed a orrelation between expression and the histologically evaluated response to chemotherapy. The expression of the other investigated genes HER-2/neu, HSP 70, GST, DHFR, BCRP, ERCC1 and Mlh1 showed no significant correlation to response to chemotherapy. CONCLUSION: In our retrospective analyses, low expression of ERCC4 was shown to be related to poor response to chemotherapy. The potential value of ERCC4 as response predictor has to be investigated in a prospective study.
