Self-propelled Leidenfrost droplets.

We report that liquids perform self-propelled motion when they are placed in contact with hot surfaces with asymmetric (ratchetlike) topology. The pumping effect is observed when the liquid is in the Leidenfrost regime (the film-boiling regime), for many liquids and over a wide temperature range. We propose that liquid motion is driven by a viscous force exerted by vapor flow between the solid and the liquid.

Experimental investigation of the breakdown of the Onsager-Casimir relations.

We use magnetoconductance fluctuation measurements of phase-coherent semiconductor billiards to quantify the contributions to the nonlinear electric conductance that are asymmetric under reversal of magnetic field. We find that the average asymmetric contribution is linear in magnetic field (for magnetic flux much larger than 1 flux quantum) and that its magnitude depends on billiard geometry. In addition, we find an unexpected asymmetry in the power spectrum of the magnetoconductance with respect to reversal of magnetic field and bias voltage.

Reversible thermoelectric nanomaterials.

Irreversible effects in thermoelectric materials limit their efficiency and economy for applications in power generation and refrigeration. While electron transport is unavoidably irreversible in bulk materials, here we derive conditions under which reversible diffusive electron transport can be achieved in nanostructured thermoelectric materials. We provide a fundamental thermodynamic explanation for why the optimum density of states in a thermoelectric material is a delta function and for why inhomogeneous doping and segmentation improve the thermoelectric figure of merit.

Symmetry of two-terminal nonlinear electric conduction.

The well-established symmetry relations for linear transport phenomena cannot, in general, be applied in the nonlinear regime. Here we propose a set of symmetry relations with respect to bias voltage and magnetic field for the nonlinear conductance of two-terminal electric conductors. We experimentally confirm these relations using phase-coherent, semiconductor quantum dots.

Reversible quantum brownian heat engines for electrons.

Brownian heat engines use local temperature gradients in asymmetric potentials to move particles against an external force. The energy efficiency of such machines is generally limited by irreversible heat flow carried by particles that make contact with different heat baths. Here we show that, by using a suitably chosen energy filter, electrons can be transferred reversibly between reservoirs that have different temperatures and electrochemical potentials. We apply this result to propose heat engines based on mesoscopic semiconductor ratchets, which can quasistatically operate arbitrarily close to Carnot efficiency.

Diffusion in tilted periodic potentials: Enhancement, universality, and scaling.

An exact analytical expression for the effective diffusion coefficient of an overdamped Brownian particle in a tilted periodic potential is derived for arbitrary potentials and arbitrary strengths of the thermal noise. Near the critical tilt (threshold of deterministic running solutions) a scaling behavior for weak thermal noise is revealed and various universality classes are identified. In comparison with the bare (potential-free) thermal diffusion, the effective diffusion coefficient in a critically tilted periodic potential may be, in principle, arbitrarily enhanced. For a realistic experimental setup, an enhancement by 14 orders of magnitude is predicted so that thermal diffusion should be observable on a macroscopic scale at room temperature.

Evolution of fractal patterns during a classical-quantum transition.

We investigate how fractals evolve into nonfractal behavior as the generation process is gradually suppressed. Fractals observed in the conductance of semiconductor billiards are of particular interest because the generation process is semiclassical and can be suppressed by transitions towards either fully classical or fully quantum-mechanical conduction. Investigating a range of billiards, we identify a "universal" behavior in the changeover from fractal to nonfractal conductance, which is described by a smooth evolution rather than deterioration in the fractal scaling properties.

Giant acceleration of free diffusion by use of tilted periodic potentials.

The effective diffusion coefficient for the overdamped Brownian motion in a tilted periodic potential is calculated in closed analytical form. Universality classes and scaling properties for weak thermal noise are identified near the threshold tilt where deterministic running solutions set in. In this regime the diffusion may be greatly enhanced, as compared to free thermal diffusion with, for a realistic experimental setup, an enhancement of up to 14 orders of magnitude.

Quantitation of catecholamines in inflamed human dental pulp by high-performance liquid chromatography.

Catecholamines may play an important role in the control of intrapulpal pressure as mediators of vasoconstriction. A baseline level of catecholamines (dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine) in the uninflamed human dental pulp was previously reported using high-performance liquid chromatography. The purpose of this study was to compare the level of catecholamines present in the inflamed human dental pulp with the baseline level established in virgin teeth. Twelve uninflamed pulps were analyzed as a control and to validate previous findings. Pulp tissue was obtained from 10 vital and inflamed teeth requiring endodontic treatment. Selective criteria for each patient included: absence of systemic disease, medications, and allergies; a vital response to ice, heat, and electric pulp tests; and periodontal probing < or = 3 mm. A prior history of pain associated with the tooth was an additional criterion for inflamed pulps. To avoid the presence of an exogenous catecholamine, local anesthesia without epinephrine was administered. Dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine were chemically extracted and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. Catecholamine levels found to be present in the pulp during inflammation were greater than the baseline level established in uninflamed pulp tissue.

Experimental tunneling ratchets

Adiabatically rocked electron ratchets, defined by quantum confinement in semiconductor heterostructures, were experimentally studied in a regime where tunneling contributed to the particle flow. The rocking-induced electron flow reverses direction as a function of temperature. This result confirms a recent prediction of fundamentally different behavior of classical versus quantum ratchets. A wave-mechanical model reproduced the temperature-induced current reversal and provides an intuitive explanation.

Hip joint forces during load carrying.

In some diseases affecting only 1 hip joint, it is necessary to keep the contact force between femoral head and acetabulum (hip joint force) permanently low at the affected side. Six subjects were examined while they were walking and carrying a load in 1 or 2 hands. It was determined how the forces in both hip joints are influenced by the magnitude of the load and the manner in which it is carried. A mathematical model was used to calculate the maximum forces in the frontal plane. One subject had instrumented endoprostheses implanted in both hips. For him the measured values were slightly higher than the calculated ones, but the overall results were similar. Carrying a load on 1 side keeps the force constant at the ipsilateral hip joint or even slightly lowers it. At the same time, there is a large increase on the opposite side. Carrying 25% of body weight with 1 hand causes about 2/3 higher forces in the contralateral joint than on the loaded side. If this load is evenly distributed between the 2 sides, both hip joint forces increase by 25%. In unilateral load carrying, additional relief of the ipsilateral joint can be achieved if the upper body is held upright and the loadcarrying arm is abducted, such as when using a large shopping basket.

Persistent BK papovavirus infection of transformed human fetal brain cells. I. Episomal viral DNA in cloned lines deficient in T-antigen expression.

After infection of permissive human fetal brain cells by BK human papovavirus (BKV), the vast majority of the cells were killed by the virus, but rare survivors were recovered after frequent medium changes. These surviving cells grew and formed visible colonies after 5 to 6 weeks and were thereafter established as permanent cell lines. These cells, designated as BK-HFB cells, were persistently infected and shed BKV. Morphologically, they were small polygonal cells and had transformed growth properties. Their plating efficiency on solid substrates or in semisolid medium was high, and they were tumorigenic in athymic nude mice. Cloning experiments in medium containing BKV antiserum revealed that BKV did not persist in the cultures in a simple carrier state. All cloned cell lines were initially T-antigen negative and virus-free. However, every clone began to release BKV and again became persistently infected within 3 weeks after removal of BKV antiserum. After rigorous antibody treatment, four of seven clones still released virus spontaneously upon removal of antiserum; three clones have remained virus-free and are apparently cured. Although these cloned cell lines are T- and V-antigen negative when grown in antiserum-containing medium, they retain "free" or episomal BKV genomes; integrated viral DNA was not detected in any of the clones. These free genomes are indistinguishable from prototype BKV DNA and are found in much larger amounts in virus-shedding cell lines.

Simian virus 40 tumor-specific proteins: subcellular distribution and metabolic stability in HeLa cells infected with nondefective adenovirus type 2-simian virus 40 hybrid viruses.

HeLa cells infected with adenovirus type 2 (Ad2)-simian virus 40 (SV40) hybrid viruses produce several SV40-specific proteins. These include the previously reported 28,000-dalton protein of Ad2+ND1, and 42,000- and 56,000-dalton proteins of Ad2+ND2, the 56,000-dalton protein of Ad2+ND4, and the 42,000-dalton protein of Ad2+ND5. In this report, we extend the list of SV40-specific proteins induced by Ad2+ND4 to include proteins of apparent molecular weights of 28,000 42,000, 60,000, 64,000, 72,000, 74,000, and a doublet of 95,000. Cell fractionation studies demonstrate that the SV40-specific proteins are detectable in the nuclear, cytoplasmic, and plasma membrane fractions. By pulse-chase and cell fractionation experiments, three classes of SV40-specific proteins can be distinguished with regard to metabolic stability: (i) unstable in the cytoplasmic but stable in the nuclear and plasma membrane fractions; (ii) stable in the nuclear, cytoplasmic, and plasma membrane fractions; and (iii) unstable in all subcellular fractions. Immunoprecipitation of infected cell extracts demonstrates that most of the above proteins share antigenic determinants with proteins expressed in hamsters bearing SV40-induced tumors. Only the 42,000-dalton protein of Ad2+ND5 is not immunoprecipitable.

Evidence for simian virus 40 (SV40) coding of SV40 T-antigen and the SV40-specific proteins in HeLa cells infected with nondefective adenovirus type 2-SV40 hybrid viruses.

HeLa cells infected with the nondefective adenovirus 2 (Ad2)-simian virus 40 (SV40) hybrid viruses (Ad2(+)ND1, Ad2(+)ND2, Ad2(+)ND4, and Ad2(+)ND5) synthesize SV40-specific proteins ranging in size from 28,000 to 100,000 daltons. By analysis of their methionine-containing tryptic peptides, we demonstrated that all these proteins shared common amino acid sequences. Most methionine-containing tryptic peptides derived from proteins of smaller size were contained within the proteins of larger size. Seventeen of the 21 methionine-containing tryptic peptides of the largest SV40-specific protein (100,000 daltons) from Ad2(+)ND4-infected cells were identical to methionine-containing peptides of SV40 T-antigen immunoprecipitated from extracts of SV40-infected cells. All of the methionine-containing tryptic peptides of the Ad2(+)ND4 100,000-dalton protein were found in SV40 T-antigen immunoprecipitated from SV40-transformed cells. All SV40-specific proteins observed in vivo could be synthesized in vitro using the wheat germ cell-free system and SV40-specific RNA from hybrid virus-infected cells that was purified by hybridization to SV40 DNA. As proof of identity, the in vitro products were shown to have methionine-containing tryptic peptides identical to those of their in vivo counterparts. Based on the extensive overlap in amino acid sequence between the SV40-specific proteins from hybrid virus-infected cells and SV40 T-antigen from SV40-infected and -transformed cells, we conclude that at least the major portion of the SV40-specific proteins cannot be Ad2 coded. From the in vitro synthesis experiments with SV40-selected RNA, we further conclude that the SV40-specific proteins must be SV40 coded and not host coded. Since SV40 T-antigen is related to the SV40-specific proteins, it must also be SV40 coded.
