[Effect and tolerance of daily 2 X 1 g imipenem/cilastatin in general surgery].

The clinical efficacy, tolerability and safety of imipenem/cilastatin were studied in a open, prospective trial with 63 general surgical patients suffering from bacterial infections. According to study criteria, 48 of the patients were evaluable. Clinical cure was achieved in 47 of these 48 patients (97.9%). The causative organisms were eliminated in 39 of the 47 patients cured. Clinical side-reactions were observed in 4.2% of the 63 patients treated. In 8.3% of these laboratory parameters were changed. 77 of the 78 microorganisms isolated before therapy were sensitive to imipenem (MICs 0.02-2.0 mg/l). In one patient a coagulase-negative staphylococcus with an MIC of 16 mg/l was isolated after five days of therapy.

Life history of Hanuman langurs (Presbytis entellus). Reproductive parameters, infant mortality, and troop development.

Longitudinal data of reproductive parameters from two langur troops (Presbytis entellus) at Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India, are presented. Females can reach menarche at approximately 29 months of age and conceive about 5 months later. Gestation length is about 200 days, average cycling length is 24 days, and mean interbirth interval 15.3 months. Postpartum amenorrhea, which ranges from 80-140 days will be reduced to 23-80 days in cases of stillbirths or early losses of infants, a fact that bears consequences in regard to the discussion of infanticide and reproductive advantage. Troop development showed distinct differences in two neighboring troops, especially in number of surviving female infants until sexual maturity. Both troops taken together, 77.9% of the newborns reached the infant-II stage (6 months), 59.3% survived until their mother's next infant (average, calculated for the mean birth interval of 15.3 months), and only 35.9% completed the 2nd year of life.

[Late radiation damage to intestines following irradiation of gynaecological tumours (author's transl)].

Causes, pathophysiology, types, and dimensions of late radiation damage, following irradiation of gynaecological tumours, are described together with the prognosis of such damage, with reference being made to published data. Intestinal surgery for radiogenic damage had to be applied to 19 patients, between 1969 and 1979. The patients had received therapeutic irradiation of gynaecological tumours, between three months and 23 years before surgery. The colon had been involved in nine cases, the small intestine in seven, and both intestinal sections in two. Postsurgical mortality accounted for 36.8 per cent.
