Application of PMR spectrometry in pharmaceutical analysis.

Noramidopyrine-methansulfonate sodium (dipyrone), in bulk drug and its Novalgin ampules, has been assayed by a new, rapid, accurate and specific method. It involves the use of PMR Spectrometry; in which the integral of the five aromatic protons present in dipyrone is compared to that of the two protons of a known amount of maleic acid used as internal standard.

Simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of nifuroxime and furazolidone in pharmaceutical preparations.

Two spectrophotometric methods have been developed for the simultaneous determination of nifuroxime and furazolidone in their pharmaceutical preparations. No preliminary separation step is required in either method. The first, a modified Vierordt method, gives accurate and reproducible results for both drugs. Mean percent recoveries for nifuroxime and furazolidone were 99.50 +/- 1.59 and 100.20 +/- 1.16 (P = 0.05), respectively. This method also gives accurate and reproducible results for the determination of nifuroxime and furazolidone in their pharmaceutical preparations: Tricofuran vaginal suppositories and powder. The second method, which involves the use of the first-derivative curves, gives unreliable results; the reasons for these are discussed.

Application of Henderson equation for the determination of weakly acidic pharmaceutical compounds. Part 1: Determination of sulfathiourea.

A new method based on the Henderson equation is proposed for the determination of sulfathiourea. The determination is achieved in mixed organic solvent/water media. To apply the Henderson equation, the dissociation constant (pKa) of sulfathiourea in such media should be known. Thus, the values of pKa as function of the composition of the media have been determination potentiometrically according to Albert and Serjeant. Equations have been derived to calculated the pKa of sulfathiourea in any medium. The pKa of sulfathiourea in water and the other solvents, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol and acetone, are reported. The proposed method is simple and rapid and gives reliable results. The mean percent recoveries of the powder in 50% solvent: methanol, ethanol, isopropanol and acetone are: 97.87 +/- 1,30, 100.85 +/- 1.35, 102.01 +/- 1.39 and 99.35 +/- 0.29 respectively. For the tablets, the mean percent recovery in 50% acetone is 97.95 +/- 0.60. The mean percent recovery of added standard sulfathiourea to the tablet powder is 101.55 +/- 0.83.

Isolation and structure assignment of an antimicrobial principle from the volatile oil of Nigella sativa L. seeds.

Refrigeration of the volatile oil of Nigella sativa L. seeds eventuates in a crystalline substance. The chemical structure of the compound was drawn from its chemical behaviour, as well as from its UV, IR, PMR and mass spectral data. The compound was found to be thymohydroquinone: confirmation of the structure was established via the preparation of its corresponding diacetate ester. The compound was found to have high antimicrobial effect against gram positive microorganisms
