[Autotransplantation of teeth].

This article gives a review of autotransplantation of teeth. From being a method of rather poor prognosis, autotransplantation has developed to be a safe treatment procedure. Scientific criteria for selecting patients, donor teeth, surgical procedures and postoperative care has contributed to this. The surgical procedure and the endodontic treatment are discussed. The degree of root development is of importance. Complications may be extern root resorption and ankylosis because of damage to the periodontium.

[Preservatives and dental caries. Can preservatives in food and beverages influence oral health?].

There has been a pronounced decline in dental caries in industrialized countries during the last decades. The most obvious explanation is exposure to fluorides. However, the decline started before fluorides were extensively used. Theoretically, a contributory factor may have been increased consumption of foods containing preservatives. The aims of the present study were to find out whether increased intake of preservatives has occurred, and to assess the effect of two commonly used preservatives, sorbic acid and benzoic acid, on bacterial growth and on plaque acidogenity in vivo. Results from five consumption reports from the Central Bureau of Statistics of Norway were used to estimate changes in consumption of basic foods containing the preservatives mentioned. A modified broth dilution method was used to determine the growth inhibitory effects on selected oral streptococci. Plaque-pH measurements were performed with a microelectrode to assess possible effects on acid production. Data pointed towards increased consumption of preservatives. Legal concentrations of preservatives inhibited bacterial growth. Similar concentrations of the preservatives had a negligible effect on acid production in dental plaque (0.4% W/V), whereas higher concentrations (2% W/V) had an inhibitory effect.

[New criteria for secondary decay and marginal defects].

The survival time of restorations and the reasons for replacements vary considerably from one study to another. Different studies report that secondary caries alone accounts for 0-60% of the reasons. Great variations in treatment planning have been reported when dentists examine the same restorations. Different diagnostic criteria and treatment strategy are probably responsible for most of the variations. In this article specific criteria for secondary caries and marginal defects are presented.

[Systems for grading occlusal and approximal carious lesions].

Well defined, graded caries diagnoses are necessary for recording caries and its progression, measurement of the efficacy of caries prophylaxis, and for the establishment of detailed information concerning the prevalence of caries. Monitoring of the severity of lesion or degree of caries should be based on well defined, reliable clinical or radiographical findings. Such criteria for occlusal and approximal caries are presented in this paper.

Comparison of oral radiographic findings among 35-year-old Oslo citizens in 1973 and 1984.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate a variety of radiographically detectable conditions found on orthopantomograms of 141 individuals as a part of an oral health survey of 35-year-old Oslo citizens, born 1949. Radiographic findings were recorded and compared with those of a similar study made in 1973. The findings revealed a statistically significant reduction in the prevalence of marginal bone loss. The frequencies of endodontically treated teeth and teeth with apical radiolucencies were unchanged.

Salivary lactoferrin in a selected group of subjects with exceptional extrinsic dental staining.

Some people exhibit an exceptional tendency to develop brownish extrinsic staining on their teeth and previous studies indicate that iron may be involved in certain types. The object of this investigation was to find out whether the level of salivary lactoferrin, which is an ironbinding glycoprotein, is elevated in persons exhibiting extreme staining tendency. Subjects who developed dark brownish discoloration on the facial surfaces of their anterior teeth during a 3-week period following professional cleaning of the teeth were selected for study. Salivary lactoferrin was measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results showed that this group of persons exhibited a markedly higher concentration of salivary lactoferrin compared with non-stainers. It was also demonstrated in an in vitro study that combinations of lactoferrin, iron, and tannic acid produced stain on slabs of enamel and dentin.

Caries prevalence of 35-year-old Oslo citizens in 1973 and 1984.

DMF teeth and surfaces were recorded in a random sample of 35-yr-old Oslo citizens (born 1949). The index values were related to selected independent variables: sex, years at school, oral hygiene status (OHI-S), periodontal conditions (PI), use of interdental cleaning devices and dental visiting habits. Data from the present investigation were analysed together with data from a similar study on 35-yr-olds in 1973 in order to detect possible changes over time. The mean DMFS-score in the present investigation was 85, indicating a high caries experience, mainly due to a high F-component. A statistically significant increase in the number of decayed surfaces was demonstrated concomitant with an increase in PI- and OHI-S scores. There were more carious surfaces among irregular dental visitors than among the regular visitors. No statistically significant differences in DMF-scores from 1973 to 1984 were detected, but there was a statistically significant reduction in the prevalence of untreated caries during this period. Furthermore, an increase in the number of filled surfaces from 1973 to 1984 and a reduction in the number of missing surfaces were registered. This may indicate a tendency towards restoring instead of extracting carious teeth during the last decade.

Cross-sectional clinical study of quality of amalgam restorations, oral health and prevalence of recurrent caries.

The purpose of the present cross-sectional clinical study was to evaluate the relationship between recurrent caries prevalence, quality of class II amalgam restorations and various oral health parameters. One hundred and forty-four randomly selected 35-yr-old citizens of Oslo were included in the investigation. Caries was scored based on a combined clinical and radiographic examination according to the DMFS index system. Oral hygiene (OHI-S) and periodontal index (PI) were registered, and the quality of class II amalgam restorations was ranked according to a set of occlusal index pictures. A total of 1694 class II amalgam restorations were included and 93 (5.5%) of these were affected by recurrent caries. A statistically significant correlation was found between prevalence of recurrent caries and poor oral hygiene, high PI-scores and prevalence of primary caries. However, a severe deterioration of the quality of amalgam restorations had to be present before a concomitant increase in recurrent caries prevalence could be registered. The present results indicate that measures improving the oral health may be of major importance in preventing recurrent caries and thereby increase the durability of amalgam restorations.
