Clinical approaches to nearpoint lens power determination.

Qualitative and quantitative criteria for prescribing plus lenses at near for prepresbyopes together with 12 behavioral objectives are described. Four quantitative prescription criteria are presented using a combined monocular estimate method-low neutral (MEM-LN) dynamic retinoscopy testing procedure. Each of the four prescription criteria are evaluated relative to an arbitrary +0.50 sphere prescription for seven different observable patterns of accommodative responses at 40 cm. Clinical and research implications of prescribing plus spheres are evaluated relative to the change in proximal stimulus characteristics and the change in accommodative response. Intersystem and intermodal consequences are suggested.

Oculomotor functions in reading disability.

Oculomotor functions and information processing systems from a complex interaction in the achievement of reading skills, This study was designed to determine the relation between oculomotor functions and reading ability in fourth and sixth grade children. Four oculomotor functions were measured during the reading of digits and prose. The oculomotor functions were used independently and collectively to predict reading ability under both reading conditions. These relations were then examined with and without removal of the influence of verbal intelligence. The results indicate that when examined collectively, oculomotor functions are related to reading ability, but when oculomotor functions are examined independently, only marginally significant relations appear. Similar relations were found for both age groups. Verbal intelligence influenced some of the individual relations. The individual oculomotor functions that appeared responsible for the collective relation were frequency of fixations and lag of accommodation. A reciprocal-causation model between reading ability and oculomotor functions is proposed.

The distance of rock test -- a preliminary report.

This paper is a preliminary report describing the development of a new clinical test for measuring the response time of the visual system to shift from distance to near and back to distance to a given discriminatory task. The new test is called Distance rock (Drk) and is calibrated in cycles per minute. Data from college students and survey results from 591 school children from the first to sixth grades were used to develop these preliminary results. Change in response time covariant with grade level was demonstrated which indicates this test may become clinically important for developmental vision.

Effects of training on near-far response time as measured by the distance rock test.

The practice effects of specific visual training were demonstrated on twelve seventh grade students and seven optometry students using a distance rock test to measure distance-near response time. Fourteen practice sessions resulted in a 49% improvement for seventh grade students (range 15 to 78%) and a 40% improvement in cycles per minute for college students (range 24 to 64%). Errors were corresponding reduced as cycles per minute were increased.
