Curriculum-based measurement of at-risk students' reading skills: a preliminary investigation of bias.

This study was a preliminary investigation of gender, socioeconomic status, and racial bias in curriculum-based measurement reading probes using students from an inner city, Chapter 1 elementary school. The reading probes involved brief 1-min. reading samples of middle-of-grade reading passages from Grade 1 through 4 as drawn from the reading texts used in the participating students' own classrooms. Analysis indicated that, except for socioeconomic status and gender differences in Grade 1, there were no gender, socioeconomic status, or racial biases across the four grades assessed. These results were discussed in the context of research on bias.

Investigating the relationship between the Millon Adolescent Personality Inventory and the Personality Inventory for Children with a sample of learning disabled adolescents.

The present study involved a preliminary evaluation of the correlations between subscales on the Personality Inventory for Children and the Millon Adolescent Personality Inventory with 25 learning disabled adolescents. Analysis yielded a number of significant correlations between these two scales, using the Personality Inventory for Children as the anchor scale, and showed that these adolescents as a group scored within clinically acceptable ranges on both diagnostic scales. Both scales need further psychometric and clinical investigation, and as such, the limitations of the study and the research needed are addressed, including the need for more multitrait, multimethod studies.

Gifted children and Visual Aural Digit Span test performance.

The performance of 81 gifted elementary students on the Visual Aural Digit Span test is discussed. The students generally showed advanced performance from Grade 1 through Grade 5 and from age 7-0 yr. through 11-11 yr. Performance at Grade 6 and the 12-0 to 12-11-yr.-old levels were generally at age-expected levels and were probably restricted due to the test's limited ceiling. Tables of means across grade and age and needs for further research are also presented.

Learning disabilities in the junior high school: creating the six-hour emotionally disturbed adolescent?

Special education programs for the learning disabled, junior high school adolescent must ecologically analyze and address the myriad variables which potentially affect self-concept. The present article reviews and coordinates recent literature which has investigated the interaction between learning disabled adolescents' self-concept and academic, peer, family, and community systems. A unique behavioral pattern, the six-hour emotionally disturbed/learning disabled adolescent may result from continuous, negative self-concept experiences. This pattern occurs when learning disabled adolescents develop expectations of constant academic or social failure, choose to avoid these situations, and engage in maladaptive, "emotionally disturbing" behaviors as protective mechanisms. In the family and/or community systems, however, these students can be socially and adaptively successful. Preventive programming for the learning disabled, junior high school adolescent is discussed across the above interdependent systems.
