Coherence control of Hall charge and spin currents.

Using two-color optical coherence control techniques in intrinsic GaAs at 80 K with orthogonally polarized 70 fs, 1430 and 715 nm pulses, we generate a pure spin source current that yields a transverse Hall pure charge current; or alternatively, with parallel polarized pulses, we generate a pure charge source current that yields a pure spin current. By varying the relative phase or polarization of the incident pulses, one can effectively tune the type, magnitude and direction of both the source and transverse currents without application of electric or magnetic fields.

Ultrafast deflection of spatial solitons in AlxGa(1-x)As slab waveguides.

We demonstrate ultrafast all-optical deflection of spatial solitons in an AlxGa(1-x)As slab waveguide, using 190 fs, 1550 nm pulses to generate and deflect the spatial soliton. The steering beam is focused onto the top of the waveguide near the soliton pathway, and the soliton is steered by refractive-index changes induced by optical Kerr, or free-carrier (Drude), effects. Angular deflections up to 8 mrad are observed.

Enhanced second-harmonic generation from planar photonic crystals.

Strongly enhanced second-harmonic generation is observed from a two-dimensional square lattice GaAs/AlGaAs photonic crystal waveguide when the fundamental beam, the second-harmonic beam, or both beams resonantly couple to a leaky eigenmode. P-polarized second-harmonic spectra are obtained for s-polarized, 150-fs pump pulses that are tuned from 5000 to 5600 cm(-1) and directed along the gamma-chi direction of the crystal for various angles of incidence. Compared with off-resonant conditions, enhancements of >1200x in the second-harmonic conversion are observed for resonant coupling of both the fundamental and the second-harmonic fields to leaky eigenmnodes. The angular and spectral positions of the peaks are in good agreement with simulations.

Direct observation of optically injected spin-polarized currents in semiconductors.

Quantum interference of one- and two-photon excitation of unbiased semiconductors yields ballistic currents of carriers. The magnitudes and directions of the currents and the spin orientations of the carriers are controlled by the polarization and relative phase of the exciting femtosecond laser fields. We provide direct experimental evidence for the spin polarization of the optically injected spin currents by detecting a phase-dependent spatial shift of the circularly polarized photoluminescence in cubic ZnSe.
