[Animal experiment studies of the effect of peracetic acid on bladder urothelium].

Animal experimenters investigations on the influence of various solutions of peracetic acid on the epithelium of the urinary bladder were carried out on rabbits. The results of the experiments showed that solutions of peracetic acid up to 0.01% are tolerated nearly without any reaction also under extreme experimental conditions. Higher concentrations of active substances lead to considerable changes of the epithelium of the urinary bladder in form of partly focal, partly diffuse haemorrhagic necrotizing urocystitides. No differences were the result when the commercial 40 percent peracetic acid Wofasteril and a 20 percent peracetic acid without admixture of a stabilizer as primary solution were used. The possible application of peracetic acid as antiseptic for the mucous membrane is discussed.

[Reflux disease and sphincter pressure].

Between patients with reflux oesophagitis (n = 8), patients with symptoms of reflux without oesophagitis (n = 27) and controls (n = 17) recordings of lower oesophageal sphincter pressure have shown no significant differences of mean sphincter pressure but a significantly lower increase of mean sphincter pressure in patients with oesophagitis and/or symptoms of reflux after pentagastrin (6 microgram/Kg b.w., s.c.) by means of pull-through perfusionsmanometry. Nearly in half of the patients with oesophagitis and symptoms of reflux basal sphincter pressure and sphincter reaction on pentagastrin were found in a normal range. Disturbances of basal sphincter pressure and its reaction on pentagastrin have shown a dependence on the anamnesis duration.

[Pleural asbestosis in dock workers].

During the last three years 29 patients with asbestosis of the pleura were examined. 21 of them were exposed to dust on wharfs as joiners, locksmiths, transport workers, isolators and in other trades. The beginning of the exposition was at least 15 years age, the duration of the exposition was 5 to 25 years. Two bronchial carcinomas and one mesothelioma of the pleura among our patients emphasize the increased risk for malignoma of the patients with asbestosis. For this reasons an early recognition and a regular medical control of the patients as well as a reducthe long time of latency between the beginning of the exposition and the appearance of morphologic changes it is recommended to employ older colleagues in the working places with dust exposition.

[Clinical studies on the paraneoplastic syndrome in intrathoracic neoplastic diseases].

Two own clinical observations concerning the paraneoplastic syndrome are reported: Gynecomastia and hypertrophic osteoarthropathy. The two symptoms appeared as primary manifestation of a bronchial carcinoma and an intrathoracically situated teratoma. The gynecomastia in an estrogen-producing teratoma of this localisation hitherto has not been described; its classification as paraneoplastic syndrome is established. The value of such individual observations may be that the knowledge of these syndromes should be deepened and thus should be indirectly contribute to the diagnostics of tumours, or even to the early recognition of the tumour.

[Cold sterilization of serums with peracetic acid].

On the basis of broad antimicrobic effect including also bacterial spores, mycoplasmas and viruses, the peracetic acid suits to sterilize in cold. By means of the final 0,1 to 0.02% concentration of the peracetic acid acting for 30 min. up to 5 days, it succeeded in sterilizing the serum used to prepare culture medium for bacteria, mycoplasmas and tissue cultures. Growth controls shown at least as good results as were those in using filtered sera. Chemical sterilization by means of the peracetic acid leads to significant diminution of neutralization and complementfixation antibodies in serum.
