Testing the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in Rayleigh-Bénard convection.

We report experimental evidence of the fact that, in an emerging Rayleigh-Bénard structure, the density of defects which appear scales as a power law in the rate of change of the control parameter. The scaling exponents agree with those calculated from the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. This is the first evidence to our knowledge that this mechanism works in a hydrodynamical system.

Nanoimaging with a compact extreme-ultraviolet laser.

Images with a spatial resolution of 120-150 nm were obtained with 46.9 nm light from a compact capillary-discharge laser by use of the combination of a Sc-Si multilayer-coated Schwarzschild condenser and a free-standing imaging zone plate. The results are relevant to the development of compact extreme-ultraviolet laser-based imaging tools for nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Synchronization of spatially extended chaotic systems in the presence of asymmetric coupling.

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 064103 (2003)]] we described the effects of asymmetric coupling configurations on the synchronization of spatially extended systems. In this paper, we report the consequences induced by the presence of asymmetries in the coupling scheme on the synchronization process of a pair of one-dimensional fields obeying complex Ginzburg-Landau equations. While synchronization always occurs for large enough coupling strengths, asymmetries have the effect of enhancing synchronization and play a crucial role in setting the threshold for the appearance of the synchronized dynamics, as well as in selecting the statistical and dynamical properties of the synchronized motion. We analyze the process of synchronization in the presence of asymmetries when the dynamics is affected by the presence of phase singularities, and show that defects tend to anchor one system to the other. In addition, asymmetry controls the number of synchronized defects that are present in the dynamics. Possible consequences of such asymmetry induced effects in biological and natural systems are discussed.

Frequency entrainment of nonautonomous chaotic oscillators.

We give evidence of frequency entrainment of dominant peaks in the chaotic spectra of two coupled chaotic nonautonomous oscillators. At variance with the autonomous case, the phenomenon is here characterized by the vanishing of a previously positive Lyapunov exponent in the spectrum, which takes place for a broad range of the coupling strength parameter. Such a state is studied also for the case of chaotic oscillators with ill-defined phases due to the absence of a unique center of rotation. Different phase synchronization indicators are used to circumvent this difficulty.

Asymmetric coupling effects in the synchronization of spatially extended chaotic systems.

We analyze the effects of asymmetric couplings in setting different synchronization states for a pair of unidimensional fields obeying complex Ginzburg-Landau equations. Novel features such as asymmetry enhanced complete synchronization, limits for the appearance of phase synchronized states, and selection of the final synchronized dynamics are reported and characterized.

Topological defects after a quench in a Bénard-Marangoni convection system.

We report experimental evidence of the fact that, in a Bénard-Marangoni conduction-convection transition, the density of defects in the emerging structure scales as a power law in the quench time needed for the control parameter to ramp through the threshold. The obtained scaling exponents differ from the ones predicted and observed in the case in which the defects correspond to zeros in the amplitude of the global two-dimensional field.

Experimental phase synchronization of a chaotic convective flow.

We report experimental evidence of phase synchronization of high dimensional chaotic oscillators in a laboratory experiment. The experiment consists of a thermocapillary driven convective cell in a time dependent chaotic regime. The synchronized states emerge as a consequence of a localized temperature perturbation to the heater. The transition to phase synchronization is studied as a function of the external perturbations. The existence and stability conditions for this phenomenon are discussed.

Synchronization of chaotic structurally nonequivalent systems

Synchronization features are explored for a pair of chaotic high-dimensional bidirectionally coupled structurally nonequivalent systems. We find two regimes of synchronization in dependence on the coupling strength: creation of a lower dimensional chaotic state, and for larger coupling a transition toward a stable periodic motion. We characterize this new state, showing that it is associated with an abrupt transition in the Lyapunov spectrum. The robustness of this state against noise is discussed, and the use of this dynamical property as a possible approach for the control of chaos is outlined.

Dorsomedial thalamotomy as a treatment for terminal anorexia: a report of two cases.

Anorexia nervosa has been considered a compulsive obsessive disorder (OCDS). We present a case report of two patients, male and female, suffering from an extremely severe, chronic and refractory anorectic syndrome. Both patients underwent bilateral stereotactic thalamotomy with involvement of the lamella medialis. Follow-up was 4 year and 2 year, respectively. Both patients have regained weight and improved significantly in terms of their obsessive-compulsive symptoms and in their quality of life. The results suggest that anorexia nervosa may be considered in the OCDS.
