[Functional and ontogenetic aspects of the interactions of the child with his peers during the first 3 years].

From 5 or 6 months of age until the end of their 3rd year of life, the children, all having the same peers, were studied. This study shows that: 1. A child has diverse and relatively complex competence in communicating with its peers, well before the age of one. 2. From 6 to 36 months of age, there is a progressive change of importance in the different kinds of behavior for the child, relating to developmental factors and ways of interacting between the child and its family. 3. A child's interactions with its peers doesn't necessarily come about through objects. 4. Most of the child's interactions seem to come from basic or pivotal behaviors, which seem to work as behavioral organizers.

Variation of behavioral and physiological variables in children attending kindergarten and primary school.

Twenty-one children aged 5-6 years (mean age: 71.2 months; S.D. = 2.7) were videotaped in 4 different kindergartens throughout the school day for a period of one week. Eighteen of these children were then followed up after the summer holidays and videotaped for one week while attending the first year of primary school. The behaviors measured for each child were yawning and general motor activity. It was found that: (1) The frequency of yawning appears to be 5 times higher in the first year of primary school than in the last year of kindergarten; (2) Throughout the school-day the percentage of yawning children is higher in the first year of primary school, with the exception of the 1400-1430 period; (3) In the first year of primary school, the percentage of yawning children and the frequency of yawning peak between 900 and 930 and 1430 and 1500; (4) In this school institution the percentage of children who get up from their chair and spontaneously move above increases from the beginning to the end of each school-day. Three cardio-vascular variables were investigated in 17 children of the sample population: heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. We found that: (1) The lowest values for heart rate in the first year of primary school are in agreement with the classical data of child development, as the children are 5-6 months older than in the last year of kindergarten. However, this is not the case at 1400 when the heart rate peaks at a higher level in the first year of primary school; (2) If the evolution in time of the blood pressure agrees in both institutions with the classical data of human chronobiology, i.e. the maximum values at 1400, the differences in mean level at all times during the school day between both institutions do not agree with what is commonly accepted, i.e. an increase in blood pressure with age; (3) The amplitude of the variations of the heart rate and blood pressure from one 30-min period to another throughout the school day is significantly higher in primary school. The comparison of the data obtained in both school institutions suggests that the observed differences are related to sharp modifications in school rhythms and constraints when the children go from the last year of kindergarten to the first year of primary school.

The genetic background of circadian and ultradian rhythm patterns of 17-hydroxycorticosteroids: a cross-twin study.

Circadian and ultradian rhythms in urinary excretion of 17-hydroxycorticosteroids were documented individually during an 8-day span in two pairs of young male twins. Studies were performed once at the age of 6 years for dizygotic twins and twice at the ages of 4.3 and 10.3 years for monozygotic twins. Four different methods were used for time-series analyses: chronograms (raw data), best-fitting curves resulting from cosinor analyses, power spectra and correlations of time-qualified data. Estimates of rhythm parameters (prominent periods, acrophases, etc.) as well as shapes of curves were closer in mono- than in dizygotic twins. Both similarities and small differences in rhythm characteristics of monozygotic twins were detected at both ages considered.

New data on the wake-sleep rhythm of children aged from 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 years.

In this paper, data concerning the duration of night and nap sleep of 107 children aged from 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 years are analysed. Data were collected over a period of 9 months and showed a significant negative correlation between night and nap sleep. The reduction in the amount of nap sleep throughout the year was related to the decrease in the frequency of naps. However, its duration remained constant. The variations in the duration of the night and nap sleep were also analysed in relation to the week day and the month of the year and socio-ecological factors.

[Olfactory stimulation in the relationship between child and mother].

In this paper, we report new data on mutual olfactory recognition between mother and child. Newborn infants were filmed since birth. When awakening in the mother's room at the Clinical Hospital, they were confronted with a cotton pad impregnated with diverse secretions of the mother and a cotton pad impregnated with the same secretions of another mother or a pad with no specific odour. We used a double-blind technique. By analyzing the films, frame by frame, we found that the whole area swept by the nose and the arms was significantly decreased in the child whose nose came into contact with the "mother" pad. The method could be used to study other sensory abilities in the baby. The olfactory abilities of the mother in relation to the baby were also tested with the double-blind principle. We found (i) on the 3rd and 4th days after birth, most mothers recognized the baby's odour, (ii) this faculty decreased from the 4th to the 6th day, and finally (iii) increased from the 8th day. These results are discussed. We also found that one-third of 3 to 5 years old children more often chose a tee-shirt worn against the mother's skin for 2 to 3 days than any other tee-shirt (worn by an alien mother or with no specific odour). It appears that olfactory cues can play a role in the attachment of the baby to its mother, and that they still are involved in that process when the child is between 3 and 5 years old.

[New data on the genesis of sleep-wakefulness rhythm in children aged 4-15 months].

The present study deals with the ontogeny of the sleep-wakefulness rhythm in 12 children from the 4th to the 15 month of age. The main findings were as follows: 1. The circadian rhythm of wakefulness and sleep is clearly sep up as of 4 months of age and is characterized by 3 main parameters: a long uninterrupted night sleep period which includes the time interval from midnight to 4 a.m. The duration of this period of time is always equal to or higher than 400 min. The periodicity of the last falling asleep before midnight and the periodicity of the first awakening after midnight are equal or very close to 24 hours. Both seem to be mutually adjusted or connected to each other. 2. Some ages are characterized by significant changes in the daily distribution of the number and duration of sleep spans. 3. These changes suggest the existence of several ultradian rhythmicities which prevail successively throughout the development period under study. 4. There are many important differences between girls and boys.
