TEM studies of the nitrided Ni-Ti surface layer.

The structure of surface layer, obtained on the nearly equiatomic Ni-Ti alloy after nitriding under glow discharge conditions at temperatures 700 or 800 degrees C, was investigated. The structural characterization of the intruded layer was performed on cross-sectional thin foils by the use of the transmission and scanning electron microscopes. The obtained results show that the nitrided layers consist mainly of the nanocrystalline TiN phase and small amount of Ti(2)N. Between the nitrided layers and beta-NiTi matrix an intermediate Ti(2)Ni phase layer was observed.

Electron crystallography applied to the structure determination of Nb(Cu,Al,X) Laves phases.

The presence of primary precipitates of the Laves phases considerably improves the mechanical properties and the resistance to thermal degradation of the high-temperature shape memory Cu-Al-Nb alloys. The structure analysis of the Laves phases was carried out on particles contained in the ternary and quaternary alloys as well on synthesized compounds related to the composition of the Nb(Cu,Al,X)(2) phase, where X = Ni, Co, Cr, Ti and Zr. The precise structure determination of the Laves phases was carried out by the electron crystallography method using the CRISP software.

Use of TiNiCo shape-memory clamps in the surgical treatment of mandibular fractures.

PURPOSE: This study tested the clinical application of shape-memory clamps for fixation of mandibular fractures using transoral access. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clamps made of Ti50Ni48.7Co1.3 alloy were used to fix mandible fractures. These clamps automatically recovered their programmed shape at body temperature. The clamps were used to treat all types of fractures occurring between the mandibular angles. Postoperative maxillomandibular fixation was not required. Clamps were removed after a period of at least 6 weeks, and tissue samples were taken for microscopic examination. RESULTS: Seventy-seven patients with mandibular fractures were treated using the shape-memory clamps. There were 19 women and 58 men, from 17 to 74 years old. Altogether 93 fractures were treated, involving 124 clamps. There were 56 cases of single fractures and 21 cases of multiple fractures. In 72 patients the treatment progressed satisfactorily; in five cases infections occurred. Histologic examination of tissue taken from 58 patients after removal of the clamps did not indicate any atypical tissue reactions or signs of disturbed cell maturation. CONCLUSIONS: The application of shape-memory clamps for surgical treatment of mandible fractures facilitates treatment while ensuring stable fixation of the bone fragments. No pathologic tissue reactions to the implants were observed in either animals or humans.

[Effect of chemical composition of powder and mercury content on the development of phase gamma-2 in amalgam structure].

The purpose of the reported model study was determination of the effect of the content of mercury differentiated with respect to the preparation procedure and application of amalgam technique (condensation) in the tissue defect on the chemical composition (phasic) of this type of filling using three various materials: Stabil-B, Amalcap-Non-Gamma and Amalcap. Stabil-B had a generally higher content of mercury, and a lower content of this metal was found in Amalcap and Amalcap-Non-Gamma 2. The lowest amount of phase gamma 2 was found in Amalcap-Non-Gamma-2 and the lowest in Stabil-B.
