In order to investigate changes in endocrine function, various tests were performed on eleven patients with anorexia nervosa. In two of them, endocrine function before and after treatment was also studied. The responses of plasma LH and FSH to LH-RH were decreased in the patients as were plasma LH-RH, and LH and FSH responses to the oral administration of clomiphene citrate. In more than half of the cases, plasma TSH showed a delayed response to TRH. The basal levels of plasma GH were elevated, and plasma GH responses to hypoglycemia or 1-arginine were lowered in half of the patients. Plasma GH showed a paradoxical rise after glucose load in three out of six cases. Plasma IRI responses to 1-arginine load were decreased in some cases, but plasma IRG responses to 1-arginine were rather excessive. Plasma IRI after glucose load showed low or delayed responses in most of the cases. After the body weight was increased to normal levels by the treatment, pituitary and pancreatic endocrine functions were normalized. These findings indicate that hypothalamic function is primarily impaired in this disease and causes nutritional disorder followed by the dysfunction of some endocrine organs. Such a possibility could be supported by the improvement of endocrine function after body weight has been recovered.
A dry powder of betel nuts, piper betel leaves and lime was administered to rats. Epidermal thickening was frequently observed in the upper digestive tracts of rats in groups fed the betel nut diet mixed with lime and the betel leaves diet, and a forestomach papilloma was seen in 1 rat given betel leaves diet. These epidermal changes were scarcely seen in rats given either betel nut or normal diet alone.

A quantitative analysis of seven components of 17-KS in human urine was successfully carried out by GCMS. The sample including deuterated 17-KS was introduced into TMS derivatives by BSTFA in pyridine. The derived TMS derivatives were analysed using the GC-MS system equipped with the column of 0.5% NPGS Chromosorb W AW DMCS, and the temperature was programmed from 180 degrees C to 240 degrees C at 3 degrees C/min. increment. Seven components were well separated, and each fraction was analysed by MS spectrum. Normal human urine was analysed by this method, the result of which is summarized in Table 3.

Polypeptides in the dorsal root ganglion (L5) of the adult rat were radioactively labeled, and components slowly migrating in the sciatic nerve (peripheral axons) and dorsal root (central axons) were analyzed, using SDS-polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis and fluorography. In particular, the transport rates and amounts of six major polypeptides, i.e., the triplet (reference 15; with mol wts of 200,000, 160,000, and 68,000 daltons), alpha- and beta-tubulins and actin were compared between the two axon branches. In peripheral axons, fronts of the triplet, tubulins, and actin migrate at 2-3 mm/d, 9-13 mm/d and approximately 19 mm/d, respectively. The corresponding values in central axons are 1-2 mm/d, 3-4 mm/d, and approximately 4 mm/d, indicating an obvious asymmetry in the transport rate between the two branches of bifurcating axons. A greater amount of labeled triplet, tubulins, and actin each is found to migrate in peripheral than in central axons. Another striking aspect of asymmetry between the two branches relates to the tubulins/triplet ratio which is significantly higher in the peripheral branch. Considerable proportions of radioactivities associated with tubulins and actin in the ganglion are nonmigratory, which are thought to derive mostly from periaxonal satellite cells. In contrast, most if not all of the labeled triplet is migratory, suggesting a virtual absence of triplet polypeptides in satellite cells. The possible significance of peripheral-central inequalities in slow axoplasmic transport is discussed from the viewpoints of axon volume and axonal outgrowth.
An autopsy case of a rare primary tumor in a 76-year-old man is described. The tumor is histologically comprised of rhabdomyoblasts massively infiltrating without any epithelial elements referable to be as hepatoma. There was no evidence that regarded the hepatic tumor as metastatic secondary tumor in histological examination of other organs. Furthermore, interesting was the production of alpha-fetoprotein from the tumor cells that was detected by immunofluorescent antibody technique. Review of the literature on primary liver rhabdomyosarcomas or adult hepatoblastomas shows no similar case.
