Rat pituitary adenoma and hyperplasia induced by caffeine administration.

The effect of caffeine by oral administration on female Wistar rats was studied for 12 months. High concentrations (2000 micrograms/mL) of caffeine caused a decrease in body weight and an increase in the weight of the pituitary gland in these rats. Increased pituitary weight was caused by the growth of a pituitary adenoma or hyperplasia. Pituitary adenomas and instances of hyperplasia were found in 27 of the 40 rats in the caffeine group, compared to 9 of the 30 rats in the control group. The histologic classification used was microadenoma, papillary (or sinusoidal) macroadenoma, and diffuse macroadenomas. These adenomas appeared to be endocrinologically nonfunctioning.

Adenoma

Epidural hematomas of the posterior fossa in children.

The authors report 3 cases of epidural hematoma of the posterior fossa in children. The clinical signs and symptoms are discussed. Onset of symptoms is not necessarily acute. The radiological findings are discussed. Epidural hematomas of the posterior fossa in children have a tendency to liquefy earlier than supratentorial hematomas. We emphasize the value of computed tomography for the diagnosis of epidural hematoma of the posterior fossa. One should keep in mind the possibility of the presence of an epidural hematoma of the posterior fossa in the treatment of head injury in children, even in the case of a minor head injury.

[Effectiveness of amoxicillin as a potent antiluetic in the treatment of syphilis (author's transl)].

A daily dose of 1.0 approximately 1.5 g of amoxicillin, a synthetic penicillin, was tried as an antiluetic in 9 cases of syphilis. Oral administration for 4 weeks makes up one course of treatment. One of the patients was given two courses of treatment. Amoxicillin showed effect in 6 patients out of 9 (66.7%). Constipation and diarrhoea were observed in two cases and one case as side effects, and they were controlled easily. Amoxicillin could be a very effective and safe antiluetic.

Administration, Oral

Precocious puberty due to a hypothalamic hamartoma.

A case of precocious puberty due to a hypothalamic hamartoma is presented. Concentrations of plasma LH and FSH, testosterone and its derivatives were found to be elevated. Circadian rhythms of LH were also observed. After removal of the mass, plasma LH and FHS concentrations declined to nearly half the preoperative levels.
