The dental arch form revisited.

Recently, the beta function has been shown to be an accurate mathematical model of the human dental arch. In this research, we tried to find the equation of a curve that would be similar to the generalized beta function curve and at the same time could represent tapered, ovoid, and square dental arches. A total of 23 sets of naturally well-aligned Class I casts were selected, and the depths and widths of the dental arches were measured at the canine and second molar regions. Using the mean depths and widths, functions in the form of Y = AXm + BXn were calculated that would pass through the central incisors, canines, and second molars. Each function was compared with the generalized beta function with the use of root mean square values. It was shown that the polynomial function Y = AX6 + BX2 was the nearest to the generalized beta function. Then the coordinates of the midincisal edges and buccal cusp tips of each dental arch were measured, and the correlation coefficient of each dental arch with its corresponding sixth order polynomial function was calculated. The results showed that the function Y = AX6 + BX2 could be an accurate substitute for the beta function in less common forms of the human dental arch.

A formula to determine the amount of retraction of mandibular canines.

Moderate to severe protrusion of anterior teeth often necessitates the extraction of 4 premolars to retract anterior teeth into their space. We present a formula that determines how far the mandibular canines should be retracted to provide adequate space for correction of lower incisor protrusion. To test the accuracy of the formula, 23 mandibular setups were made and the results of the formula were compared with those of the setups. Paired t-tests at a confidence level of 95% did not show any statistically significant differences between the results.

Interrelationships between the width, depth, and perimeter of the dental arch.

Recently, beta function has been shown to be an accurate mathematical model of the human dental arch. In this article a beta function-based nomograph is presented that shows interrelationships between arch width, arch depth, and arch perimeter. This nomograph can be especially useful in predicting the effect of orthognathic surgery on these 3 variables of a dental arch.

Design and fabrication of a modified protraction headgear for Class III long face patients.

Treatment of children with long face and with Class III malocclusions is difficult because most of the available appliances treat one of the two problems at the cost of aggravating the other one. In this article, we present the steps of design and fabrication of a modified protraction headgear that can be useful for such a patient. A patient treated with this approach is presented.
