Generalized AA-amyloidosis in Siberian tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) with predominant renal medullary amyloid deposition.

Generalized amyloidosis with predominant renal medullary amyloid deposition was found in four closely related Siberian tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) suffering from end stage kidney diseases. Only minimal to mild amounts of amyloid were deposited in various organs outside the kidneys with individually variable organ involvement. The Congo red staining affinity of amyloid deposits was sensitive to potassium permanganate oxidation. The deposits were further characterized as being of the amyloid-A (AA) type by immunohistochemistry using the mouse monoclonal antibody mc4 directed against a conserved region of the human AA-protein. A combination of immunohistochemistry and Congo red staining was much more sensitive for the diagnosis of amyloid deposits than Congo red staining alone. With this combination, even minimal amyloid deposits were detected that had been missed in the first reading using Congo-red-stained slides alone. Since no common primary cause was identified, the amyloidosis was classified as idiopathic generalized AA-amyloidosis with a potential familial predisposition.

[Risk factors for the occurrence of eye damage following ethambutol treatment].

The present paper deals with two cases of severe irreversible visual disturbances (bilateral opticus atrophy) after combined antituberculous chemotherapy including ethambutol following unilateral nephrectomy because of tuberculosis of the kidneys and with farther complications as damages of the blood vessels and diabetes mellitus. Damages of the kidneys are especially predisposing to side effects by ethambutol and inclusion into an ophthalmological dispensary at short intervals is necessary.

[Experiences with the 32P test in tumor diagnosis].

A report on results of 186 32P tests is given. Radiation increases of more than 30%, compared with tumor-free areas, were considered as positive. 95 eyes were histologically examined. The 32P test gave 90 correct positive answers and 1 correct negative answer. Faulty positive results were found in 2 cases; faulty negative results were also found in 2 cases. This means that the diagnosis was correct in 95%. The literature is discussed concerning reliability and methods. The dangers of the use of 32P are stressed, and the development of noninvasive nuclear-medical diagnostic methods is suggested.

[Length measurements by rocking-plate micrometry at the fundus of the human eye (author's transl)].

An additional unit which can be used for length measurements at the fundus of the human eye is described for the ophthalmoscope. The principle of measurement is based on optical displacement of the measuring object to itself. The optical displacement of picture points is made possible by the use of a tilting flat glass plate in the intermediate image plane of the eyepiece. The relation between the optical displacement of picture points and the measuring movement is sufficiently linear for the described device.

[The entropion of the upper lid (author's transl)].

The non-cicatricial rolling-inwards of the upper lid is a rare disease. The horizontal tarsotomy by Hadija correct the entropion and eliminate the irritating trichiasis. It is not of less importance, to tauten the reduced elasticity of the fascia tarsoorbitalis. Therefore is necessary a skin resection and a separate suture of the lamina for additional strengthening and permanence of the lid eversion. The method of operation was successful in 12 from 15 cases.
