[Evaluation of child guidance counseling: status of research and references for future research].

The evaluation of child guidance is placed in the context of quality control with emphasis on the significance of evaluation under field as opposed to laboratory conditions as well as the advantages of experimental or quasi-experimental field research over catamnestic studies. Up until now only three experimental evaluation studies have been carried out in the field of child guidance under natural conditions. These studies are first described in terms of their methods and results and then placed in a larger context on this basis. Proceedings from these studies based on methodological considerations and empirical evidence, comments and recommendations will be made concerning methodologically satisfactory and practically significant future evaluation research. They emphasize in particular the different evaluation strategies as well as various aspects of validity.

[Undetermined family diagnosis--uncertain diagnosis].

The results of testing convergence- and discriminance-validity of the central dimensions "cohesion" and "control" for family diagnostics and therapy are presented in this paper by means of a multitrait-multimethod matrix which includes five known family diagnostic instruments from seven studies published up until the end of 1995. The main result demonstrates that both discriminance- and convergence-validity cannot be considered safe from "cohesion" or "control".

[Emotion-focused couples therapy--treatment approach--evaluating effectiveness and process research].

Emotionally-Focused Couple/Marital Therapy will be examined and discussed in terms of methods of treatment, its effectiveness and underlying therapy processes. Four different evaluation studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Emotionally-Focused Couple/Marital Therapy when used to resolve difficulties between couples with slight to moderately severe problems relatively in regard to pertinent treatment alternatives and absolutely in comparision to nontreatment. In addition, its clinical relevance has been demonstrated. Moreover, five studies on the investigation of procedures have reached conclusions which concur with the theory of treatment postulated.

[A meta-analysis of the effectiveness of gestalt therapy].

This metaanalytical assessment of evaluation research in the field of Gestalt therapy has been conducted on the basis of 38 studies which took place between 1970 and 1986. Its scope is substantially broader than the metaanalysis of Smith, Glass and Miller (1980) or the secondary analysis of Grawe's Berner Workgroup documented in Forschungsgutachten zu Fragen eines Psychotherapeutengesetzes (1991). The results indicate Gestalt therapy to be an effective psychotherapeutic treatment which is not inferior to other comparable methods of treatment. No definitive statement can be made concerning differential indication, individual therapy setting or long-term measures.

[Effectiveness of the Gordon parent training].

The analysis of recent reviews concerned with the efficacy of Parent Effectiveness Training (PET) demonstrates, within limits, its reliability and helpfulness as a therapeutic measure for children and adolescents. However, parents do seem to benefit more than their offsprings, on whom, judged by outcome, the effectiveness seems minor. As to its indication, open questions remain. Taking everything into account it would seem somewhat unjust or premature, to erasure PET from the catalogue of approved measures.

[Humor in family therapy--on the status of the discussion].

Strategic and systemic family therapists in particular are increasingly characterized by humorous interventions. This opens up a new round in the longstanding discussion about the function and significance of humour in psychotherapists. Based on the available literature the present state of the discussion is illustrated. This shows three things in particular: Against the background of a constructivistic epistemology therapeutic humour is shown in a completely new light; strategic and systemic therapists can make use of humour in different functional contexts; and in connection with a systemic approach therapeutic humour seems to be of eminent positive significance.

[Family diagnosis and evaluation research].

Investigations are presented examining the reliability and validity of family-diagnostic methods which have served to evaluate family therapy or might be used for this purpose, respectively. The central result of these investigations has shown that even common instruments for assessing the family system, its internal structure or the way it is interconnected with larger social systems rarely prove to be sufficiently reliable and even more seldom satisfactorily valid. The significance of the results for theory and practice is discussed.

[Remarriage in the aged].

A comprehensive review of our knowledge on remarriage in old age is presented, based on demographic data and on empirical studies both from Germany and elsewhere. In 1984, more than 8000 people aged 60 years and above remarried after the death of a partner or following divorce. The probability for remarriage in this age group in Germany and other Western industrial countries is about 0.015. The likelihood for men to remarry is approximately five to six times higher and can be best interpreted as a reflector of the distribution of sexes on the "remarriage market", rather than as an expression of any differential priorities or attitudes between sex groups. Other factors influencing remarriage are numeric age, social status, ethnic and religious integration and previous experiences of married life. The interval between loss of a partner and remarriage commonly stretches between 1.5 and 5.5 years. The main motive for remarriage is the wish not be alone. Basic values underlying the choice of a partner are the same as in the previous partnership. There are no apparent differences between the sexes with regard to the estimated success of their partnership. In three out of four cases, remarriage in old age seems to be a successful undertaking.
