The treatment of mandibular cysts associated with osteogenesis imperfecta.

A fifteen-year-old boy with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and dentinogenesis imperfecta also had a big cyst in the mandible and needed surgical therapy. Six months postoperatively we saw a complete regeneration of the bone-structures. We came to the conclusion that cysts which appear independently from the disease of OI can heal after surgical intervention.

[Computer documentation of malignomas of the mouth, jaws and face using the BAIK system].

The computer-supported documentation of head and neck tumors by means of the BAIK-system is presented. The experience after introducing the project to clinical routine use in patient's treatment is outlined. The subsystems of BAIK are critically reviewed for this purpose. Although we realize some drawbacks of BAIK the system proved to be useful for our application, mainly because of its strong retrieval functions, combining coded and free text data manipulation.

[Surgical expansion of midpalatal suture by means of modified Le Fort I osteotomy].

From 1984 to 1987 thirty-nine adult patients suffering from a transverse maxillary deficiency were operated by a modified Le-Fort-I-osteotomy to facilitate the following rapid orthopedic expansion. A horizontal osteotomy was made through the lateral wall of the maxilla from the interior lateral aspect of the piriform aperture to the pterygomaxillary suture, which was also sectioned. After the operation the palatal expansion appliance (Biedermann-Hyrax-screw) was normally activated one one-quarter turn twice a day until the desired expansion was achieved. In each case this surgical orthodontic procedure showed to be an excellent method to correct transverse maxillary deficiencies. This procedure is especially indicated in patients with bilateral crossbite. Unilateral crossbites can also be treated this way, if a later Le-Fort-I-osteotomy is necessary to correct sagittal or vertical discrepancies.
