[Diagnostic value of jejunal biopsy].

Trying to find out the clinical elements that define the precise indication ofr a jejunal biopsy, 28 children with several pathological conditions were studied. They were 12 cases of kwashiorkor, 11 cases with chronic diarrhea, two cases of chronic pancreatitis, 2 cases with ferropenic anemia resistant to the oral treatment with iron and one case of chilous ascitis. It is concluded that only in those cases in which the biopsy is the precise medium for diagnosis is where it would be indicated, such as intestinal lymphangiectasis or in those cases with signs or evidence of malabsorption without diarrhea. The chronic diarrhea per se does not seem to be a formal indication for biopsy.

Adolescent

[A peculiar syndrome of congenital abnormalities].

Two cases of mental retardation distichia, blepharophimosis, blepharoptosis, synophrys, prominent and long phyllum, auricular defects, palmar simial crease, clinodactyly and lymphedema, in a child and his mother, is represented, suggesting a specific syndrome due to a genetic defect inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion. Two other cases with blepharophimosis, blepharoptosis, prominent and long phyllum and mental retardation are commented, suggesting a different expression of the same genetic defect.

Abnormalities, Multiple

[Etiological factors in children with reading disorders].

Twenty-three children with reading retardation were studied from the etiological point of view, finding that 14 cases were associated with a low I. Q.; 5 with integrative defect of the C N S; 3 with sensorial defects; one with emotional conflicts and one with language duality. Reading retardation; dyslexia; intellectual retardation; integrative defects of the CNS; sensorial defects; emotional conflicts; language duality.

Affective Symptoms

[Petit mal in children].

Thirty-two cases of children with petit mal were reviewed, finding that it is an entity of low frequency among the group of epileptic disorders; also there is no differences between sexes. The prognosis has become worsening by the presence of other types of crises, abnormal neurological examination, subnormal intelligence, behavior disorders and an "atypica", EEG. It is also influenced by the beginning of therapy at the pubertal development time. Ethosuximide seems to be the drug of choice in the "uncomplicated" cases.
