18 patients with proven multiple sclerosis were examined by pattern reversal visual stimulation. Stimulations were carried out on full fields, foveal areas and horizontal half-fields of single eyes and on half-fields of both eyes. 77% of the patients demonstrated pathological alterations of the potentials in more than one kind of stimulation. In all patients pathological signs could be found, which pointed on the optic nerve. Only the results of three patients suggested a lesion within the central optic pathway. The demonstration of multiple lesions of the optic system in patients with multiple sclerosis is difficult and rarely possible.
811 patients from an orthopaedic outpatients department were tested by means of a neurosis-relevant screening method (BFB and VFB by Höck and Hess). Results from a questionnaire suggest a neurotic disturbance in nearly 40 per cent of the cases. The importance of psychosocial factors to the formation course and the prognosis of diseases of the locomotor system is being discussed. Ways to improve the psychotherapeutic knowledge of doctors working in the field of orthopaedics are considered.
Electrophysiologic studies of posterior tibial nerves by averaging method and morphometric investigations of sural nerves by automatic image analysis were performed in 7 non-diabetic rats 42 d after the administration of 55 mg streptozotocin/kg b.w. and in 10 untreated controls. Morphometry of stained semithin sections was carried out with system A 6471-AMBA/R (Robotron, Dresden, G.D.R.). There was no decrease of motor nerve conduction velocity in streptozotocin injected animals. The investigated morphometric parameters showed no significant alterations in the streptozotocin group. The studies show that in streptozotocin diabetic rats electrophysiological and morphological alterations of the peripheral nerve are caused by hyperglycemia but not by direct neurotoxic effects of streptozotocin.

Issuing from the international level of the psychosomatic medicine a critical estimation of the achievements in the GDR is done. The chances for a higher degree of cooperation resulting from the organisational structure of our public health service are illustrated and with the attempt of a preliminary definition for the psychosomatic medicine at the same time a graduated way of education is indicated. The cogent reasons for the acquisition of knowledge and qualification for results and trends of psychosocial medicine derive themselves from the changed development of morbidity in the developed industrial country GDR and immediately need aimed integration.

Ganglion cells of both the left and right dorsal root ganglia L5 were investigated morphometrically in 8 diabetic rats 35 or 44 d after the administration of streptozotocin, as well as in 8 controls. The quantitative study included the analysis of mean neuron volume, maximal cell diameter, cell number per volume, by cell size class and the analysis of histograms. There were no changes in cell size. Whereas in experimental short-term diabetes the peripheral nerves demonstrate morphologic changes correlating to the biochemical abnormalities (reduced amino-acid uptake, decreased activity of Na+, K+-ATPase) no such correlations can be observed in the perikarya.
The article deals with the case of a patient who had a partial gastrectomy and developed a vitamin B12 deficiency syndrome with anemia, myelopathy and complete loss of the senses of taste and smell. Regression of the symptoms followed liberal dosing with vitamin B12.
Common peripheral neurogenic lesion in various locations and of different origins were examined thermographically and the results were compared with those obtained by clinical and electromyographic methods. Lesions in the regions of the N. ulnaris and N. medianus can, except in the case of carpal tunnel syndrome, be identified without difficulty by thermography. The results obtained in the case of paresis of the radialis are non-specific, and thermographic examination of radicular lesions are also sometimes ambiguous. Damage in the plexus-brachialis and root region yield impressive results which, however, are not particularly useful.
It is not possible to exactly differentiate bilateral abducent paralysis case topographically into those arising peripherally and those from the brain stem by means of clinical data. The application of electrophysiological methods, especially the acoustically evoked brain stem potentials and the oculo-auricular phenomena, greatly increases the accuracy of topographical diagnosis. If the oculo-auricular reaction can be triggered in the normal way, a lesion of the brain stem may be practically excluded, whereas changed acoustically evoked potentials at an early point may indicate a disturbance of function in the core region of the 6th cranial nerve.
The application of an isolated punctiform stimulation with a needle electrode using the opposite large-surface electrode as an anode makes it possible to study the whole peripheral nerve including the nerve root after its exit from the spinal canal electroneurographically. This method enables the determination of nerve conduction speeds even over short nerve distances in a more exact way. The simultaneous stimulation of nearby nervous structures, which is frequently observed when surface electrodes are used, can be avoided.

The oculoauricular phenomenon is a synergism between an external eye muscle, the m. rectus lateralis, and the facialis innervated m. retroauricularis. In the neurological diagnostic this phenomenon permits a differentiation between the abducens nerve paresis of peripheral and of nuclear origine. In addition to this electromyographic examination from the m. retroauricularis can discover disturbances of the neuromuscular transmission and facilitate an early prognostic estimation of peripheral facialis paresis.
