Assessment of muscle fatigue in low level monotonous task performance during car driving.

Knowledge of the muscle activation and the development of muscle fatigue may provide more inside in the effects of long-term driving in the occurrence of health problems in the neck/shoulder/back area. The basic assumption behind fatigue detection with electromyography (EMG) is an increase in the EMG amplitude and a decrease of the mean frequency (MF). This study aimed at checking this assumption in monotonous task performance with low level activity during car driving. Surface electromyography was captured from left and right trapezius and deltoid muscles, during a repetitive, non-continuous, driving task (gearing and steering) and the active parts were separated from the non-active parts. Muscle stiffness was reported by more than half of the subjects after a 1 h drive. Only for the active parts a significant decrease of the MF was seen. But also the EMG amplitude decreased significantly. Two possible mechanisms are posted in literature for this finding: no extra recruitment of motor units (MU) and potentiation of muscle fibers. Literature also hypothesizes that low-force occupational work engages only a fraction of the MU available for recruitment and that these units are selectively type I muscle fibers (Cinderella fibers). Initiators of this phenomenon are probably the time lag between activations and the stress from driving and vibration exposure.

Statistical modelling of fatigue-related electromyographic median frequency characteristics of back and hip muscles during a standardized isometric back extension test.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate which statistical model - linear, logarithmic, quadratic or exponential - best described the fatigue-related electromyographic (EMG) changes of back and hip muscles. Twenty healthy volunteers performed a modified Biering-Sorensen test. The EMG activity of the latissimus dorsi (LD), longissimus thoracis pars thoracis (LTT) and lumborum (LTL), iliocostalis lumborum pars thoracis (ILT) and lumborum (ILL), multifidus (MF), gluteus maximus (GM) and biceps femoris (BF) was measured bilaterally using surface electrodes. Higher R(2) values were found for the quadratic models (p<0.05 for all muscles), and lower R(2) values for the logarithmic models (p<0.05 for LTT, LTL, ILL, MF and GM). The exponential models generated higher R(2) values compared to the linear ones for the LTT, LTL and MF (all p<0.05). Further analyses revealed, however, that these models did not add useful additional information, and therefore would only increase the complexity. The findings of the current study validate the use of simple linear regression techniques when studying fatigue-related EMG median frequency characteristics of back and hip muscles during isometric contractions.

Spray drift as affected by meteorological conditions.

Spray drift can be defined as the quantity of plant protection product that is carried out of the sprayed (treated) area by the action of air currents during the application process. This continues to be a major problem in applying agricultural pesticides. The purpose of this research is to measure and compare the amount of drift for different climatological conditions under field conditions. Spray drift was determined by sampling in a defined downwind area at different positions in a flat meadow using horizontal drift collectors (sedimenting spray drift) and pipe cleaners (airborne spray drift) for a reference spraying. Meteorological conditions were monitored during each experiment. A drift prediction equation for the reference spraying was set up to predict the expected magnitude of sedimenting drift at various drift distances and atmospheric conditions (wind speed and temperature). This equation can be used to compare measurements using other spraying techniques under different weather conditions to the reference spraying. In 2005, more measurements will be performed to validate the statements and the model reflected in this paper.

A pdpa laser-based measuring set-up for the characterisation of spray nozzles.

The characteristics of agricultural sprays belong to the most critical factors affecting spray drift, deposition on plants, spray coverage and biological efficacy. Hence, within the framework of a research project about agricultural spray drift, a measuring set-up for the characterisation of spray nozzles using a Phase Doppler Particle Analyser (PDPA) was developed. This set-up is able to measure droplet sizes and velocities based on light-scattering principles. It is composed of different parts i.e.: a climate room, a spray unit, a three-dimensional automated positioning system and an Aerometrics PDPA 1D system. This paper presents a detailed description of this measuring set-up along with some first measuring results. These measurements will be used as an input for a Computational Fluid Dynamics drift-prediction model and to classify nozzles based on their driftability.

Validation of the wavelet spectral estimation technique in biceps brachii and brachioradialis fatigue assessment during prolonged low-level static and dynamic contractions.

An experiment was carried out to investigate the myoelectrical manifestations of fatigue of the Biceps Brachii and Brachioradialis muscles in low-level (15% MVC) prolonged isometric and dynamic contractions. The range of the joint angle was 70-110 degrees and the mean speed of flexion and extension was about 33.33 degrees /s (1.2 s for 40 degrees ). The use of Wavelet transform (IMNF) in weakly stationary dynamic SEMG signals was validated in comparison with the Fourier transform (MPF). The development of fatigue and its myoelectrical manifestations (increase in RMS and decrease in mean frequency) in dynamic contractions show no deviations from what is found in literature for both spectral estimation techniques. The benefit of Wavelets is its future use in non-stationary conditions. Lower IMNF slopes in dynamic compared to isometric contractions for Biceps Brachii might be an indication that wavelets reflect more the changes in muscle fiber propagation velocity. The results of the use of Wavelet transform in detecting frequency modulations in different movement phases of the dynamic tests show that in the eccentric phase a systematic shift towards lower frequencies occurs. It also reveals the great possibilities of phase separation using Wavelets with high resolution and low interaction.

Wind tunnel evaluation of several tracer and collection techniques for the measurement of spray drift.

In the history of pesticide drift measuring techniques, different tracers and a lot of different collection techniques have been used. At the start of a new Flemish project 'Protecting the Flemish environment against drift - The importance of drift-reducing techniques', wind tunnel tests have been executed to select the most efficient tracer and collection technique. As tracer types a fluorescent tracer Renaissance W15, 2 different chelates, a NaCl-solution and a fungicide Tolylfluanide were used. 2 different collection techniques were tested: drains incorporated in the wind tunnel floor filled with filter paper and filled with cloths. The recovery of the different tracers combined with the 2 collection materials was calculated. The advantages and disadvantages of the tracers and collection materials are enumerated in this article.

Buttock and back pressure distribution tests on seats of mobile agricultural machinery.

Multidisciplinary effort is usually required in the evaluation of comfort problems in the working environment of mobile agricultural machinery workers. Comfort can be partly assessed from the study of the pressure distribution of the human-seat interface. Four combine foam seats and a new air-based seat were compared with regards to static buttocks and back support pressures. Within and between subject variability and the issue of measurement repeatability were addressed. Significant differences were found in the maximum pressure profiles of the four seating systems with seats 2 and 3 performing better than seat I (seat 4 showed no significant difference when compared to the other seats). There is an almost linear relationship between mean pressure and body mass index. In all cases the air seating system performed better with regards to the static pressure gradients.

Near-infrared spectroscopy reflects changes in mesenteric and systemic perfusion during abdominal compartment syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Continuous and minimally invasive near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-derived gastric tissue oxygen saturation (GStO(2)) and muscle tissue oxygen saturation (MStO(2)) were evaluated in a clinically relevant porcine model of hemorrhagic shock and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS). METHODS: Phenobarbital-anesthetized swine underwent pulmonary artery catheter insertion for mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO(2)) measurement and midline laparotomy to permit placement of a gastric NIRS probe, a jejunal (regional carbon dioxide [PrCO(2)]) tonometer, superior mesenteric artery (SMA) flow probe, and a portal vein oxygen saturation (SpvO(2)) catheter. A muscle NIRS probe was placed on the front limb. After randomization, Group 1 underwent hemorrhage and resuscitation. Group 2 had no hemorrhage or resuscitation. ACS was induced by peritoneal fluid infusion in both groups. A significant decrease in SMA flow, SpvO(2), GStO(2), SvO(2), and MStO(2) was observed after hemorrhage in Group 1 and with abdominal hypertension in both groups. RESULTS: GStO(2) significantly correlated with SMA flow (Group 1: r(2) = 0.90; Group 2: r(2) = 0.83) and mesenteric oxygen delivery (mesenteric oxygen delivery, Group 1: r(2) = 0.73; Group 2: r(2) = 0.89). MStO(2) significantly correlated with SvO(2) (Group 1: r(2) = 0.99; Group 2: r(2) = 0.65) and systemic oxygen delivery (SDO2, Group 1: r(2) = 0.60; Group 2: r(2) = 0.88). Tonometer-derived PrCO(2) values did not change at any time point in either group. CONCLUSIONS: NIRS measurement of GStO(2) and MStO(2) reflected changes in mesenteric and systemic perfusion respectively during hemorrhage and ACS.
