Studies on the effect of cyclophosphamide on Yoshida sarcoma ascites cells implanted into the colon wall of rats.

Yoshida ascites cells in doses of 10(3)X300, 500, 1500, and 3000 cells per animal were injected into the wall of the descending colon of 10 male Sprague-Dawley rats each. Doses of 10(3)X1500 cells and more per animal yielded a 100% rate of take-up of the graft. Whereas untreated control animals died medianly after 17 days, a single i.p. application of 70 mg/kg cyclophosphamide on days 8 or 10, respectively, after the tumor cell inoculation considerably prolonged the survival times. In both cases the median survival time amounted to more than 60 days. The application of the cytostatic drug 12 days after tumor cell implantation yielded only a slight increase in the median survival time (23 days). The introduction of this tumor model for screening new chemotherapeutics or combinations of chemotherapeutics to be used against colon tumors is discussed.

The risks of tracheal intubation.

Various lesions have been described as post-intubation complications: injuries, of usually minor degree, of the pharynx and larynx, oedema of the larynx, ulcerations of the pharynx and larynx with pseudomembranes and bleeding, chondromalacy of the larynx, granulomata, oesophago-tracheal fistula, stenosis of the larynx or trachea, paralysis and synechia of the vocal cords, paralysis of the tongue. Etiologic factors of these complications are mainly chemical, in relation with the material of the tube and with the sterilization agents, or mechanical due to pressure on neighbouring tissues. Post-intubation sore throat seems independent from traumatic laryngoscopy. Although intubation is meant to provide safer ventilation, interference with respiration may occur by compression of the tube or accidental obstruction from various causes. It should not be forgotten that in anesthesia cases, for which intubation is not really required, it may be advantageous to administer the anesthetic by mask.

Cerebral blood flow under enflurane anesthesia.

Cerebral blood flow was measured, under controlled conditions of stable ventilation and PaCO2, in 11 patients suffering from cerebro-vascular lesions. Comparing the results under N2O-enflurane 1% anesthesia with those under N2O-fentanyl anesthesia shows an average 8.4% decrease of blood flow. In 5 cases, a third measurement was performed under N2O-enflurane 2% anesthesia. This caused an average 8.5% complementary decrease. Whereas most inhalational anesthetic agents produce an increase of cerebral blood flow, this is not observed with enflurane, the tendency rather being towards a decrease.

Mobile intensive care unit. Present conception and realisation.

A new Mobile Intensive Care Unit has been put in use at the "Service 900" of the Ministry of Health in Belgium. Its size was decided to enable efficient treatment of one patient. The type of suspension was chosen to give the patient adequate protection against untoward effects of travelling sickness. Radio-communication with the control center and hospital is ensured. The O2 supply-system provides an autonomy of 11 hours. Besides an electric distribution of 12 V. DC, a 220 V. AC is also available.
