Role of nearest-neighbor drops in the kinetics of homogeneous nucleation in a supersaturated vapor.

A theory of simultaneous nucleation and drop growth in a supersaturated vapor is developed. The theory makes use of the concept of "nearest-neighbor" drops. The effect of vapor heterogeneity caused by vapor diffusion to a growing drop, formed previously, is accounted for by considering the nucleation of the nearest-neighbor drop. The diffusional boundary value problem is solved through the application of a recent theory that maintains material balance between the vapor and the drop, even though the drop boundary is a moving one. This is fundamental to the use of the proper time and space dependent vapor supersaturation in the application of nucleation theory. The conditions are formulated under which the mean distance to the nearest-neighbor drop and the mean time to its appearance can be determined reliably. Under these conditions, the mean time provides an estimate of the duration of the nucleation stage, while the mean distance provides an estimate of the number of drops formed per unit volume during the nucleation stage. It turns out, surprisingly, that these estimates agree fairly well with the predictions of the simpler and more standard approach based on the approximation that the density of the vapor phase remains uniform during the nucleation stage. Thus, as a practical matter, in many situations, the use of the simpler and less rigorous method is justified by the predictions of the more rigorous, but more complicated theory.

Fusion of the extended modified liquid drop model for nucleation and dynamical nucleation theory.

We present a new phenomenological approach to nucleation, based on the combination of the "extended modified liquid drop" model and dynamical nucleation theory. The new model proposes a new cluster definition, which properly includes the effect of fluctuations, and it is consistent both thermodynamically and kinetically. The model is able to predict successfully the free energy of formation of the critical nucleus, using only macroscopic thermodynamic properties. It also accounts for the spinodal and provides excellent agreement with the result of recent simulations.

Study of nonsteady diffusional growth of a droplet in a supersaturated vapor: treatment of the moving boundary and material balance.

A new mathematical treatment of the problem of droplet growth via diffusion of molecules from a supersaturated vapor is presented. The theory is based on a semiquantitative analysis with good physical arguments and is justified by its reasonable predictions. For example it recovers the time honored growth law in which, to a high degree of approximation, the droplet radius increases with the square root of time. Also, to a high degree of approximation, it preserves material balance such that, at any time, the number of molecules lost from the vapor equals the number in the droplet. Estimates of the remaining approximational error are provided. On another issue, we show that, in contrast, the conventional treatment of droplet growth does not maintain material balance. This issue could be especially important for the nucleation of another droplet in the vicinity of the growing droplet where the rate of nucleation depends exponentially on supersaturation. Suggestions for further improvement of rigor are discussed.

Osmotic force resisting chain insertion in a colloidal suspension.

We consider the problem of inserting a stiff chain into a colloidal suspension of particles that interact with it through excluded volume forces. The free energy of insertion is associated with the work of creating a cavity devoid of colloid and sufficiently large to accommodate the chain. The corresponding work per unit length is the force that resists the entry of the chain into the colloidal suspension. In the case of a hard sphere fluid, this work can be calculated straightforwardly within the scaled particle theory; for solutions of flexible polymers, on the other hand, we employ simple scaling arguments. The forces computed in these ways are shown, for nanometer chain and colloid diameters, to be of the order of tens of pN for solution volume fractions of a few tenths. These magnitudes are argued to be important for biophysical processes such as the ejection of DNA from viral capsids into the cell cytoplasm.

Surface crystallization of supercooled water in clouds.

The process by which liquid cloud droplets homogeneously crystallize into ice is still not well understood. The ice nucleation process based on the standard and classical theory of homogeneous freezing initiates within the interior volume of a cloud droplet. Current experimental data on homogeneous freezing rates of ice in droplets of supercooled water, both in air and emulsion oil samples, show considerable scatter. For example, at -33 degrees C, the reported volume-based freezing rates of ice in supercooled water vary by as many as 5 orders of magnitude, which is well outside the range of measurement uncertainties. Here, we show that the process of ice nucleus formation at the air (or oil)-liquid water interface may help to explain why experimental results on ice nucleation rates yield different results in different ambient phases. Our results also suggest that surface crystallization of ice in cloud droplets can explain why low amounts of supercooled water have been observed in the atmosphere near -40 degrees C.

Extended (n/v)-Stillinger cluster for use in the theory of homogeneous nucleation.

In this paper we develop a theory for an extended version of the (n/v)-Stillinger cluster that has been used in nucleation theory, where n means the number of particles constituting the cluster characterized by the volume v. The "extended cluster" incorporates some of the surrounding supersaturated vapor. This cluster, although requiring more extensive simulation than the original (n/v)-Stillinger cluster, is almost devoid of approximation. It maintains the non-ad-hoc nature of the original (n/v)-Stillinger cluster implicitly. The theory of the cluster is also applicable to clusters which avoid redundancy by some other means than the so-called "connectivity requirement." Simulation of the extended cluster is now being implemented and will be used in the theory of the homogeneous nucleation rate.

Fluctuation of the number of particles deposited on a flat surface by a random sequential adsorption mechanism.

The problem of the fluctuations of the number n of particles adsorbed on surfaces through a random sequential adsorption process is discussed. Attention is paid, in particular, to the effect of the size of the adsorbing surfaces upon the variance sigma2(n) of this number. On the basis of computer simulations, it is shown that sigma2(n) is not proportional to the area a of the surface but can be written as a sum of three contributions, which are proportional to a, a1/2, and a0. A theoretical estimate based on the relation between the radial distribution function g(r) and the fluctuation is presented and provides a basis for these findings. This analysis is of general validity and can, in particular, also be applied to the equilibrium case (in the absence of a phase transition) and to the ballistic deposition process.

[Initial experiences with CA-15-3 determination in the serum of patients with breast cancer].

CA 15-3 levels were determined immunoradiometrically in sera of 63 women with breast cancer (44 with stage I to III cancer, pre-operatively, 5 with local recurrence or lymphnode metastases and 14 patients with distant metastases) and 30 women with benign breast tumours or fibrocystic disease. 32% elevated levels (greater than 25 U/ml) have been found in all carcinomas compared with 7% in 44 patients without any evidence of disease (NED) and 0% in the benign lesions. In locally limited breast carcinomas, the very low pre-operative sensitivity of 16% prevents early tumour detection, whereas in patients with distant metastases a sensitivity of 86% (12 out of 14) has been found. In follow-up, continuous rising of CA 15-3 levels reveals metastatic or progressive disease with a great accuracy, decreasing serum values were only found in cases of remission. A positive correlation between the actual clinical situation in follow-up and the changes in these tumour marker levels has been observed in 87%. The CA 15-3 test system seems to be useful assay for patients with breast cancer with respect to earlier detection of distant metastases, especially of osseous type. This tumour marker is not suitable for screening or early diagnosis of small tumour recurrence in the follow-up of breast cancer patients.

Role of spongiosography in study of penile veins.

Spongiosography can help visualize the same venous system seen in cavernosography during erection with papaverine. In 4 cases where the deep dorsal vein was ligated, spongiosography was used to demonstrate why improvement was not sustained. These ligations were not successful because the deep dorsal vein can rechannel through small veins at the site of excision. Furthermore, the external pudendal vein may divert the blood into the femoral vein after dorsal vein ligation. The distribution of the circumflex veins at the level of the spongiosal bodies represents a formidable anastomotic network of veins that bypass all attempts to restrict deep dorsal vein outflow.
