Probing the electronic structures of coordination compounds by transient spectral hole-burning. Applications to specifically deuterated [Ru(bpy)3]2+ complexes.

Transient spectral hole-burning (THB), a powerful technique for probing the electronic structures of coordination compounds, is applied to the lowest excited 3MLCT states of specifically deuterated [Ru(bpy)3]2+ complexes doped into crystals of racemic [Zn(bpy)3](ClO4)2. Results are consistent with and complementary to conclusions reached from excitation-line-narrowing experiments. Two sets of 3MLCT transitions are observed in conventional spectroscopy of [Ru(bpy-d(n))(3-x)(bpy-d(m))x]2+ (x = 1, 2; n = 0, 2; m = 2, 8; n not = m) complexes doped into [Zn(bpy)3](ClO4)2. The two sets coincide with the 3MLCT transitions observed for the homoleptic [Ru(bpy-d(m))3]2+ and [Ru(bpy-d(n))3]2+ complexes and can thus be assigned to localized 3MLCT transitions to the bpy-d(m) and bpy-d(n) ligands. The THB experiments presented in this paper exclude a two-site hypothesis. When spectral holes are burnt at 1.8 K into 3MLCT transitions associated with the bpy and bpy-d2 ligands in [Ru(bpy)(bpy-d8)2]2+, [Ru(bpy)2(bpy-d8)]2+, and [Ru(bpy-d2)2(bpy-d8)]2+, side holes appear in the 3MLCT transitions associated with the bpy-d8 ligands approximately 40 and approximately 30 cm(-1) higher in energy. Since energy transfer to sites 40 or 30 cm(-1) higher in energy cannot occur at 1.8 K, the experiments unequivocally establish that the two sets of 3MLCT transitions observed for [Ru(bpy-d(n))(3-x)(bpy-d(m))x]2+ (x = 1, 2) complexes in [Zn(bpy)3](ClO4)2 occur on one molecular cation.

On the nature of the trigonal fields in hexaaquachromium(III) in guanidinium aluminum sulfate hexahydrate.

Zeeman and site selective luminescence and excitation spectra in the region of the 2E<--4A2 transition are reported for the hexaaquachromium(III) complex in the trigonal ferroelectric guanidinium aluminum sulfate hexahydrate. The two prominent transitions are due to the R1 lines of the two sites of C3 and C3v point symmetry. The two R1 lines display g parallel = -3.1 and g parallel = -3.2, respectively, and show no measurable Zeeman shift or splitting with B perpendicular c. This behavior is consistent with the presence of a very large trigonal field. A peculiar feature of the present system is the conspicuous absence of any prominent R2 line. From the Zeeman data with B perpendicular c and a comparison of vibrational sidelines in excitation and luminescence it is concluded that the R2 level strongly interacts with vibrational levels.

The source and characteristics of chemiluminescence associated with the oxygenase reaction catalyzed by Mn(2+)-ribulosebisphosphate carboxylase.

We confirm the observation of Mogel and McFadden (Mogel, S.N., and McFadden, B. A. (1990) Biochemistry 29, 8333-8337) that ribulosebisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rubisco) exhibits chemiluminescence while catalyzing its oxygenase reaction in the presence of Mn2+. However, our results with the spinach and Rhodospirillum rubrum enzymes differ markedly in the following respects. 1) Chemiluminescence intensity was directly proportional to enzyme concentration and behaved as if representing the rate of oxygenase catalysis. 2) The wavelength spectrum peaked at about 770 nm and extended beyond 810 nm. This seems inconsistent with chemiluminescence generated by simultaneous decay of pairs of singlet O2 molecules. It is consistent with manganese(II) luminescence and we discuss its possible sources. The time course of chemiluminescence (resolution, 0.25 s) was distinctively different for spinach and R. rubrum enzymes during the initial 5 s of catalysis, with the bacterial enzyme exhibiting a pronounced initial "burst." Chemiluminescence by the spinach enzyme responded to substrate concentrations in a manner consistent with known oxygenase properties, exhibiting Michaelis-Menten kinetics with ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (Km 400 nM). Chemiluminescence required carbamylated enzyme with Mn2+ bound at the active site (activation energy, -57.1 KJ.mol-1). As an indicator of oxygenase activity, chemiluminescence represents an improvement over oxygen electrode measurements in response time and sensitivity by factors of at least 100.
