Migration of bisphenol A from can coatings--effects of damage, storage conditions and heating.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an important monomer used in the manufacture of epoxy resins for internal food can linings. Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of different storage conditions and can damage on the migration of BPA to foods. These experiments were conducted in a systematic fashion by filling empty epoxyphenolic coated cans with four foods: soup, minced beef, evaporated milk and carrots and a food simulant (10% ethanol). Filled cans of each food type or simulant were then sealed and processed using appropriate conditions, before storage at three different temperatures: 5 degrees C, 20 degrees C and 40 degrees C. For each of the storage regimes, 50% of the cans were dented to establish if this would lead to increased BPA migration. Cans were removed from these stocks at intervals of 1, 3 and 9 months storage at 5 degrees C and 20 degrees C or 10 days, 1 and 3 months at 40 degrees C. Some initial problems of heterogeneity between samples was overcome by determining the amount of BPA in food as well as in the can lining. It was found that 80-100% of the total BPA present in the coating had migrated to foods directly after can processing by pilot plant filling with food or simulant, sealing and sterilization. This level was not changed by extended storage (up to 9 months) or can damage, indicating most migration was occurring during the can processing step. There was no noticeable difference, in this respect, between the different foods or the food simulant. Analysis of control samples (foods fortified with approximately 0.1 mg kg(-1) BPA and contained in Schott bottles) showed that BPA was stable under both processing and storage. Experiments were also conducted to investigate the potential effects, on the migration of BPA from can coatings, of cooking or heating foods in the can prior to consumption. Food cans were purchased and the food either cooked or heated in the can. BPA was analysed prior to and after the heating/cooking process. It was concluded from the results that there were no appreciable differences in the BPA level before and after cooking or heating.

Blood group related antigens in ocular cicatricial pemphigoid.

AIM: To study the MUC5AC and the blood group related antigen expression in ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP) according to the distribution of Lewis and secretor phenotypes in OCP patients compared to normal subjects. METHODS: Immunostaining was performed on conjunctival biopsy specimens from 22 consecutive patients suffering from OCP, using monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) directed against the peptidic core MUC5AC mucin (anti-M1/MUC5AC Mabs) and against the saccharide moieties (anti-blood group related antigens). These latter included anti-Le(a), anti-Le(b), anti-sialyl Le(a), and H type 2 Mabs, which immunoreact with Lewis positive and non-secretor (Le(a)), Lewis positive and secretor (Le(b)), Lewis positive (sialyl Le(a)), and secretor (H type 2) phenotypes respectively. Serological tests were also performed to confirm the phenotype of each patient. The immunohistopathological patterns and the distribution of Lewis and secretor phenotypes were compared with the results of a previous study in normal individuals. RESULTS: (1) In OCP patients compared to the normal population, anti-M1 immunoreactivity of goblet cells was unchanged, whereas anti-Le(a), anti-Le(b), and anti-sialyl Le(a) immunoreactivities of epithelial and/or goblet cells were markedly decreased. (2) 41% of OCP patients had a non-secretor phenotype, which is statistically significantly more than the estimated incidence of the same phenotype in the French population (20%) (p approximately 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Mucins in OCP patients showed a decreased expression of blood group related antigens whereas the MUC5AC peptidic core detected by anti-M1 Mab remained unchanged. These results also seem to indicate that OCP may be associated with a non-secretor phenotype.

Maximal lactate steady state does not correspond to a complete physiological steady state.

The purpose of this study was to verify whether the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) corresponds to a physiological steady state. Eight male trained subjects performed a 30-min test on a cycle ergometer at a constant power corresponding to their own MLSS which had been previously determined. No significant variation was observed between the 10th and the 30th min for arterial lactate concentration, redox state, arterial oxygen pressure, arterial oxygen saturation, bicarbonates concentration, base excess, hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, plasma volume, oxygen uptake, carbon dioxide output, gas exchange ratio, minute ventilation, ventilatory equivalents for oxygen and carbon dioxide, and arterial systolic blood pressure values. However, arterial carbon dioxide pressure and pH values were significantly different between the 10th and the 30th min (p < 0.01). Respiratory rate values and heart rate significantly increased (p < 0.01). These results indicate that MLSS does not correspond to a complete physiological steady state.

Plasma lactate and plasma volume recovery in adults and children following high-intensity exercises.

AIM: To compare plasma lactate concentration recovery kinetics when measured and corrected for variations in plasma volume between children and adults. METHODS: Nine boys (11.3 +/- 1.1 y) and 8 men (21.9 +/- 1.9 y) performed a maximal and a supramaximal exercise until exhaustion. Plasma lactate concentrations, haemoglobin and haematocrit were measured at rest, immediately on completion of exercise and after the 2nd, 5th, 12th and 30th minute of recovery. The plasma lactate concentrations and the rate of recovery were corrected for variations in plasma volume. RESULTS: The maximal decreases in plasma volume were significantly higher in adults than in children for maximal exercise (-18.7 +/- 2.6% vs -14.5 +/- 3.2%; p < 0.05), but similar for the supramaximal exercise (-16.9 +/- 3.4% vs -15.2 +/- 3.4%). During recovery, measured and corrected plasma lactate concentrations were significantly higher in adults. The rate of plasma lactate recovery was higher in adults for maximal exercise only. The same results were obtained when the rates of plasma lactate decrease were calculated from corrected plasma lactate concentrations. CONCLUSION: The correction of the plasma lactate concentrations for variations in plasma volume did not influence the comparison of the concentrations obtained in adults and children, or their rate of recovery.

Plasma lactate recovery from maximal exercise with correction for variations in plasma volume.

BACKGROUND: To compare plasma lactate concentrations and plasma lactate kinetics during recovery, for measured and corrected values for changes in plasma volume, after a maximal aerobic exercise. METHODS: Sixteen male subjects performed an incremental and maximal exercise in order to reach maximal aerobic power. Prior to the exercise, at the end and during recovery (2, 5, 12 and 30 min), blood samples were collected through an antecubital catheter. Samples were analysed for lactate, hematocrit and hemoglobin in order to calculate changes in plasma volume. Plasma lactate concentrations ([La]p) were corrected for changes in plasma volume. Plasma lactate kinetics was estimated through the ratio between [La]p after 5 min recovery minus [La]p after 30 min to time (25 min) and expressed in percentage per minute. RESULTS: Maximal changes in plasma volume (-19.7 +/- 3.8%) were correlated to maximal measured [La]p (r=0.66, p<0.01). Maximal measured [La]p values (14.9 +/- 2.6 mmol x l-1) were 17.3% higher (p<0.001) than corrected values (12.7 +/-2.0 mmol x l-1). The kinetics of [La]p decrease was significantly higher (p<0.001) for measured values (2.38 +/- 0.29 % x min-1) than for corrected values (2.22 +/- 0.33 % x min-1). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggested that changes in plasma volume must be taken into account when peak postexercise plasma lactate concentration or lactate recovery curves are analysed.

Treatment of ocular cicatricial pemphigoid with sulfasalazine.

PURPOSE: To assess the outcome of patients with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP) treated with sulfasalazine as an alternative to dapsone. DESIGN: Retrospective noncomparative case series. PARTICIPANTS: Nine patients with biopsy-proven OCP and previous dapsone-related adverse effects (hemolysis and gastrointestinal disturbances) treated with oral sulfasalazine. METHODS: Clinical data were abstracted from patients' medical records. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Patients' symptoms, ocular inflammation, conjunctival scarring, complete blood cell count (including reticulocyte count). RESULTS: At the initiation of sulfasalazine therapy, ocular inflammation was controlled in all patients but one. Mean follow-up was 12 months (range, 2-35 months). Median oral sulfasalazine dosage was 3 g (range, 1-4 g). The disease remained controlled with sulfasalazine alone in four patients (45%). Two patients (22%) required adjunctive oral cyclophosphamide. Adverse effects necessitating drug withdrawal occurred in three patients (33%): hemolysis in two and gastrointestinal disturbances in one. CONCLUSIONS: Sulfasalazine may be useful in OCP patients with previous dapsone-related adverse effects.

Acute respiratory effects of exposure to stainless steel and mild steel welding fumes.

Over the past few years, many studies, including one on our previous work, have examined the chronic effects of fumes from stainless steel (SS) welding on the health of welders. These chronic effects have been related to concentrations of chromium and nickel in SS welding fumes. The present study examined the acute respiratory effects of welding fumes in the workplace by measuring the across-shift changes in a population of 144 SS and mild steel (MS) welders and 223 controls. Manual Metal Arc, Metal Inert Gas, and Tungsten Inert Gas welding processes were studied. Pulmonary function tests were performed at the start (ante, or A) and at the end (post, or P) of the work shift. The study of sensitization to harmful respiratory effects of welding was based on the study of the (P-A)/A ratio (%) of the spirometric variations during the shift. The means of these ratios in the control subjects were used to account for the circadian effect. In SS welders we observed a significant decrease in forced vital capacity (FVC) during the shift. Significant across-shift decrements in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and FVC were related to the SS welding exposure compared with MS welding. Moreover, the across-shift decreases in FEV1, FVC, and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were significantly related to the Manual Metal Arc welding process, compared with Metal Inert Gas techniques (respectively, PEF = -2.7% of baseline values [SD, 11.9] vs 2.0% of baseline values [SD, 7.7] P = 0.04; FVC = -1.5% of baseline values [SD, 4.8] vs 0.2% of baseline values [SD, 4.5] P = 0.05). We also demonstrated the influence of duration of SS welding exposure on the course of lung function during the work shift. After 20 years of SS welding activity, SS welders had more significant across-shift decreases than MS welders with a similar MS exposure duration (respectively, FEV1 = -2.7% of baseline values [SD, 5.9] vs 0.7% of baseline values [SD, 4.2] P = 0.008; PEF = -3.8% of baseline values [SD, 9.6] vs 2.3% of baseline values [SD, 6.5] P = 0.04). We concluded that welding-related lung function responses are seen in SS compared with MS welders and in those with a longer lifetime welding history.

[Conjunctivitis, episcleritis and scleritis].

Conjunctivitis, episcleritis and scleritis are inflammation of external part of the eye ball. All these disease induce "red eyes". Some of these inflammation are potentially severe. Visual function can be involved. Conjunctivitis, episcleritis and scleritis can also be the first location of a severe systemic disease.

Insulin antiapoptotic signaling involves insulin activation of the nuclear factor kappaB-dependent survival genes encoding tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 2 and manganese-superoxide dismutase.

We recently showed that the antiapoptotic function of insulin requires nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) activation (Bertrand, F., Atfi, A., Cadoret, A., L'Allemain, G., Robin, H., Lascols, O., Capeau, J., and Cherqui, G. (1998) J. Biol. Chem. 273, 2931-2938). Here we sought to identify the NF-kappaB-dependent survival genes that are activated by insulin to mediate this function. Insulin increased the expression of tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 2 (TRAF2) mRNA and protein in Chinese hamster ovary cells overexpressing insulin receptors (IRs). This effect required (i) IR activation since it was abrogated by IR mutation at tyrosines 1162 and 1163 and (ii) NF-kappaB activation since it was abolished by overexpression of dominant-negative IkappaB-alpha(A32/36) and mimicked by overexpression of the NF-kappaB c-Rel subunit. TRAF2 contributed to insulin protection against serum withdrawal-induced apoptosis since TRAF2 overexpression mimicked insulin protection, whereas overexpression of dominant-negative TRAF2-(87-501) reduced this process. Along with its protective effect, overexpressed TRAF2 increased basal and insulin-stimulated NF-kappaB activities. All effects were inhibited by IkappaB-alpha(A32/36), suggesting that an amplification loop involving TRAF2 activation of NF-kappaB is implicated in insulin antiapoptotic signaling. We also show that insulin increased manganese-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) mRNA expression through NF-kappaB activation and that Mn-SOD contributed to insulin antiapoptotic signaling since expression of antisense Mn-SOD RNA decreased this process. This study provides the first evidence that insulin activates the NF-kappaB-dependent survival genes encoding TRAF2 and Mn-SOD and thereby clarifies the role of NF-kappaB in the antiapoptotic function of insulin.

Immunoelectron microscopic study of the conjunctiva in cicatricial pemphigoid.

BACKGROUND: Immune deposits can be found on the conjunctival basement membrane zone of patients affected by cicatricial pemphigoid using immunofluorescence technique. The purpose of this study was to perform direct immunoelectron microscopy on the conjunctiva of patients with scarring conjunctivitis associated with cicatricial pemphigoid. METHODS: Conjunctival and skin biopsies were performed in six patients who presented with presumed autoimmune cicatrizing conjunctivitis associated with cicatricial pemphigoid. Specimens were processed for direct immunofluorescence and direct immunoelectron microscopy. RESULTS: Direct immunofluorescence was positive in all skin samples and in three of six conjunctival samples. Direct immunoelectron microscopy showed immune deposits in the lamina lucida and the lamina densa of all skin and conjunctival samples. CONCLUSIONS: Direct immunoelectron microscopy can be performed on the conjunctiva. It shows the precise localization of cicatricial pemphigoid target antigens within the conjunctival basement membrane zone.

Relationship in humans between spontaneously chosen crank rate and power output during upper body exercise at different levels of intensity.

The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between spontaneously chosen crank rate (SCCR) and power output during two upper body exercise tests: firstly, an incremental maximal aerobic power test (T1), with an initial intensity of 50 W followed by 15-W increases at each subsequent 90-s stage and secondly, a test (T2) with consecutive exercise periods set at 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 110% and 120% of maximal power (Pmax) separated by passive recovery periods. Eight nationally and internationally ranked kayakers, aged 20 (SD 2) years, performed the tests. During both T1 and T2, mean SCCR values were correlated (r = 1) and increased significantly (P < 0.05) in association with the increases in power output. The finding that the subjects consistently increased their crank rate as the power output increased in different tests, i.e. at submaximal, maximal and supramaximal intensities, strongly suggests that SCCR depended on power output and not on the type of exercise (incremental or rectangular exercise). Moreover, the equation relating crank rate and power output determined from T1 suggests that it may be used to predict the crank rate which will be chosen in upper body exercise, whatever the intensity. Finally, the results of testing at 110% and 120% of Pmax would suggest that a high crank rate (>90 rpm) should be used during the test procedure using supramaximal exercises where accumulated oxygen deficit is calculated, and more particularly when exercise is performed using the upper body.

Pure ocular cicatricial pemphigoid. A distinct immunopathologic subset of cicatricial pemphigoid.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP) may represent a distinct immunopathologic disease when it is pure ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (POCP) (e.g., only confined to the conjunctiva) or when it is associated with skin or extraocular mucous membrane lesions or both (OCP+). DESIGN: Prospective, immunologic, and immunopathologic study with special emphasis on direct immunoelectron microscopy. PARTICIPANTS: Six patients with POCP and seven patients with OCP+. INTERVENTION: After informed consent was obtained, a conjunctival biopsy was performed in all patients. Skin and extraocular mucosa biopsy specimens were harvested in selected cases only. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Results of direct immunofluorescence and direct immunoelectron microscopy without freezing on conjunctival and skin biopsy specimens, indirect immunofluorescence, and Western immunoblotting analysis were analyzed. RESULTS: Results of direct immunoelectron microscopic examination of the conjunctiva showed the presence of immune deposits in the upper lamina lucida of the basement membrane zone in the six patients with POCP, whereas the immune reactants were located in the lower part of the lamina lucida and in the lamina densa of the basement membrane zone (conjunctiva, buccal mucosa, and skin) in the seven patients with OCP+. Direct immunofluorescence was positive in the biopsy specimens of three patients with POCP (50%) and the seven patients with OCP+ (100%). Results of indirect immunofluorescence study showed circulating autoantibody levels only in two patients with OCP+, and results of Western immunoblot analysis were negative. CONCLUSIONS: Results of direct immunoelectron microscopic examination of the conjunctiva support the hypothesis that POCP may be a disease entity distinct from mucocutaneous cicatricial pemphigoid.

Physiological effects of variations in spontaneously chosen crank rate during sub-maximal and supra-maximal upper body exercises.

The aim of the present study was to compare the physiological responses when the crank rate was chosen spontaneously (Ts) or set at +/- 10% (T-10%, T+10%) of the freely chosen rate, during two upper body exercises: i) a sub-maximal test (T(SUB)) in which intensities ranged from 50 to 80% (118.4 +/- 10.2 to 189.5 +/- 16.3 watts) of maximal power (MP) and ii) a supramaximal test (T(SUPRA)) in which power output was set at 110 and 120% (260.5 +/- 22.4 and 284.2 +/- 24.4 watts) of MP. Eight nationally and internationally ranked kayakers, aged 20 +/- 2 years, performed these tests in which power outputs were normalised in relation to the maximal power output determined during T(MP). In T(SUB+10%), oxygen uptake and ventilation were significantly (P< 0.05) higher than during T(SUBxS). In T(SUB+10%) and T(SUB-10%), energy expenditure was significantly (P<0.05) higher and gross and net efficiencies lower than during T(SUBxS). During T(SUPRA-10%) when the power output was set at 110% of MP, time to exhaustion was significantly higher (P<0.05) than during T(SUPRAxS). The findings of the present study suggest that upper body exercise performed on an ergocycle should be conducted using the freely and spontaneously chosen crank rate.

[Treatment of ocular cicatricial pemphigoid with sulfasalazine].

PURPOSE: To report on three patients with biopsy-proven ocular cicatricial pemphigoid successfully treated with sulphasalazine. METHODS: Three case reports. RESULTS: A 71-year-old man, treated with dapsone for ocular cicatricial pemphigoid stopped his treatment because of an allergy to this drug. Oral sulphasalazine, 2.5 grams daily was successfully used as an alternative treatment (3 month follow-up). Two patients, aged 71 and 84 year old, were treated with dapsone for ocular cicatricial pemphigoid. Both patients stopped their treatment because of drug induced hemolytic anemia. They then received oral sulphasalazine, 4 grams daily. The disease was successfully controlled. In the first patient, sulphasalazine was discontinued after 13 months; and in the second patient no relapse was seen after a 16 month follow-up period. No adverse side effect of sulphasalazine occurred. CONCLUSION: Sulphasalazine, that has already been proven to be effective for Crohn's disease, also can be used in ocular cicatricial pemphigoid. However, further studies including a larger series of patients along with a longer follow-up are necessary to confirm the efficacy of sulphasalazine in this disease.

A role for nuclear factor kappaB in the antiapoptotic function of insulin.

We previously reported that insulin activates nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO)-R cells overexpressing wild-type insulin receptors (IRs) through a pathway requiring IR tyrosine kinase and Raf-1 kinase activities. We now investigated whether the activation of NF-kappaB by insulin could serve an antiapoptotic function. Insulin (10(-9)-10(-7) M) inhibited apoptosis induced by serum withdrawal in CHO-R cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Insulin antiapoptotic signaling: (i) was dependent on IR number and IR tyrosine kinase activity since it was reduced in parental CHO cells and was abolished in CHO-Y2 cells overexpressing IRs mutated at Tyr1162/1163; (ii) was, like insulin activation of NF-kappaB, dependent on Raf-1 but not on mitogen-activated protein kinase activity since both processes were decreased by the dominant-negative Raf-1 mutant Raf-C4 whereas they persisted in mitogen-activated protein kinase-depleted cells; and (iii) required NF-kappaB activation since it was decreased by proteasome inhibitors and the dominant-negative IkappaB-alpha (A32/36) mutant and was mimicked by overexpression of the NF-kappaB c-Rel subunit. We also show that insulin antiapoptotic signaling but not insulin activation of NF-kappaB involved phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI 3-kinase), as supported by the inhibition of the former but not of the latter process by the PI 3-kinase inhibitor LY294002. Inhibition of both NF-kappaB and PI 3-kinase totally abolished insulin antiapoptotic signaling. Thus insulin exerts a specific antiapoptotic function which is dependent on IR tyrosine kinase activity and is mediated by both a Raf-1-dependent pathway that leads to NF-kappaB activation and a PI 3-kinase-dependent pathway.

Enterocytic differentiation of the human Caco-2 cell line correlates with alterations in integrin signaling.

We previously reported that the enterocytic differentiation of human colonic Caco-2 cells correlated with down-regulation of fibronectin (FN) and laminin (LN), two extracellular matrix components interacting with cell surface integrin receptors. We now investigated whether Caco-2 cell differentiation was associated with alterations in integrin signaling with special interest in the expression and activity of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase. The differentiation of Caco-2 cells was associated with: 1) down-regulation of beta1 integrin expression at the mRNA and protein levels; 2) increased FAK expression together with decreased FAK autophosphorylation; 3) decreased FAK's ability to associate with PI3-kinase and pp60c-src; and 4) increased MAP kinase expression along with decreased MAP activity. In addition, we show that FAK and MAP kinase belong to distinct integrin signaling pathways and that both pathways remain functional during Caco-2 cell differentiation since the coating of differentiating cells on FN and LN but not on polylysine increased the tyrosine phosphorylation of FAK and of its endogenous substrate paxillin, and stimulated MAP kinase activity. In conclusion, our results provide evidence that FAK and MAP kinase, two signaling molecules activated independently by beta1 integrins in Caco-2 cells, undergo alterations of both expression and activity during the enterocytic differentiation of this cell line.

[Exhale nitric oxide (NO) and respiratory function measured with body plethysmography in children].

BACKGROUND: Exhaled nitric oxide (NO) may be a marker of airway inflammation. Previous studies in adults have shown that the level of NO in exhaled air is influenced by several factors (breath holding, exercise, etc), or by several disease (asthma, congestive heart failure, diseases of the upper respiratory tract, cystic fibrosis, etc). However, few studies have been performed in children less than 3 years of age. The aim of this study was to determine endogenous NO levels in children with various diseases during lung volume measurements. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-two children aged 18.3 +/- 9.5 months were studied. The population was divided in two groups, according to the underlying disease: a group of 39 children with cystic fibrosis (n = 7), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (n = 17), asthma (n = 7) or recurrent respiratory tract infections (n = 8) and a second group of 13 children without respiratory disease. Lung function was measured by whole body plethysmography and several respiratory parameters were calculated (functional residual capacity [FRC], compliance and resistances of the respiratory system, trapped volume). NO production was measured on a chemiluminescence analyzer from mixed exhaled air collected into a bag, over a period of 5 minutes. RESULTS: NO production was related to disease: exhaled NO levels were three times higher in bronchopulmonary dysplasia and cystic fibrosis, compared to NO levels in children without respiratory disease. They were higher in asthma. They were not altered in recurrent respiratory tract infections. No correlation was found between respiratory parameters and NO production. However, exhaled NO levels were correlated to trapped volume, which defined dynamic part of pulmonary hyperinflation. CONCLUSION: Levels of endogenous NO in infants were similar to those measured in adults with and without inflammatory respiratory disease. Lung distention influenced exhaled NO production.

Respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function among stainless steel welders.

In the last few years, many studies have been carried out concerning the effects of fumes from stainless steel (SS) welding on the health of welders. The respiratory effects of exposure to SS welding fumes have already been studied, but the results of lung function investigations have not been consistent. However, the main factor of risk for the welders' health seems to be related to the great concentration of chromium and nickel contained in fumes coming from SS welding. The aim of this study was to detect the chronic effects of SS welding exposure on pulmonary symptoms and ventilatory function tests. Respiratory symptoms and lung function tests were studied in 134 SS welders and 252 controls (C). Welders and controls were of similar average age, height, and duration in employment. The smoking habits of the groups were also similar. The medical questionnaire on respiratory symptoms was a version of the Medical Research Council questionnaire, modified by the British Occupational Hygiene Society. The flow-volume curves were performed with a calibrated pneumotachograph spirometer before each subject started working. After adjustment for tobacco habits, the SS welders presented a higher prevalence of bronchial irritative symptoms such as cough (P = 0.01) or sputum production (P = 0.02) than the controls. On the other hand, chronic bronchitis appeared to be significantly linked to tobacco consumption. The pulmonary function analysis underscored no significant difference between stainless steel welders and controls (forced expiratory volume in one second, observed/predicted: SS = 0.99 vs C = 0.98; maximal midexpiratory flow, observed/predicted: SS = 0.90 vs C = 0.92; maximal expiratory flow at 50 % of the forced vital capacity, observed/predicted: SS = 0.95 vs C = 0.95). On the other hand, by the mean of the two-ways analysis, a significant tobacco effect was found, without exposure or interaction of tobacco-exposure effects. There was no influence of the specific welding processes on the spirographic parameters, but a decrease in spirographic values after 25 years of welding activity was evident. The results of multiple regression indicated that age was not a confounding factor.
