Use of an electronic stimulator for the treatment of dry mouth.

This paper presents an innovative approach to the treatment of xerostomia through normal physiologic mechanisms with a device that provides electrical stimulation to the oral and pharyngeal afferent nervous system; the result is a reflex volley of efferent impulses to the salivary glands, causing salivation. The device has been successful in treating xerostomic patients regardless of the etiology of their dry mouths.

Role of afferent sensors in the initiation of swallowing in man.

Chewing and swallowing sounds that were recorded on magnetic tape by means of a paralaryngeally placed contact microphone were used to evaluate temporal relationships of the events of the swallowing cycle in young women. Temporal inter-event parameters indicate a reflex nature for the initiation of swallowing, and the effects of topical anesthesia suggest a triggering mechanism for swallowing similar to the gating theory for pain proposed by Melzack and Wall.

An intraoral self-contained artificial larynx.

It has been estimated that approximately one third to one half of persons undergoing total laryngectomy do not obtain a satisfactory voice. These patients remain aphonic or use artificial larynges to facilitate their communication. A multidisciplinary group at Thomas Jefferson University has developed a miniaturized artificial larynx that fits on a dental prosthesis or dental plate which has over a 100-dB sound pressure level output at the source and is powered by two hearing aid batteries with a life expectancy of over 100 hours of continuous use. Clinical trials have shown that persons using other artificial devices quickly adapt to this new artificial larynx, and the first person who began using the device, an Italian, commented that he could now use both hands; and felt that this was a great help because of his ethnic background.
