An orthorhombic polymorph of 10,11-dihydrocarbamazepine.

The title compound (systematic name: 10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenz[b,f]azepine-5-carboxamide), C15H14N2O, is shown to crystallize as an orthorhombic polymorph to complement the known monoclinic form. The molecular conformations of both forms are very similar, involving a bent conformation for the seven-membered azepine ring and an overall ;butterfly' shape. The molecules assemble into chains by way of N-H...O bonds and N-H...pi interactions in both crystal modifications. The two polymorphs appear to form due to different van der Waals interactions between the layer-like sheets of molecules.

Conformations of three heterocyclic perhydropyrrolobenzofurans and polymeric assembly via co-operative intermolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonds.

In 1-cyclohexyl-6,6,8a-trimethyl-3a,6,7,8a-tetrahydro-1H-1-benzofuro[2,3-b]pyrrole-2,4(3H,5H)-dione, C19H27NO3, (I), and the isomorphous compounds 6,6,8a-trimethyl-1-phenyl-3a,6,7,8a-tetrahydro-1H-1-benzofuro[2,3-b]pyrrole-2,4(3H,5H)-dione, C19H21NO3, (II), and 6,6,8a-trimethyl-1-(3-pyridyl)-3a,6,7,8a-tetrahydro-1H-1-benzofuro[2,3-b]pyrrole-2,4(3H,5H)-dione, C18H20N2O3, (III), the tetrahydrobenzo-dihydrofuro-pyrrolidine ring systems are folded at the cis junction of the five-membered rings, giving rise to a non-planar shape of the tricyclic cores. The dihydrofuran and pyrrolidine rings in (I) are puckered and adopt an envelope conformation. The cyclohexene rings adopt a half-chair conformation in all the molecules, while the substituent N-cyclohexyl ring in (I) assumes a chair form. Short intramolecular C-H...O contacts form S(5) and S(6) motifs. The isomorphous compounds (II) and (III) are effectively isostructural, and aggregate into chains via intermolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonds.

Proton-bifurcated C-H...(O,O) hydrogen bonds in 2,3-dichloro-6-nitrobenzylaminium chloride.

In the crystal structure of the title salt, C7H7Cl2N2O2+.Cl-, the chloride anions participate in extensive hydrogen bonding with the aminium cations and indirectly link the molecules through multiple N+-H...Cl- salt bridges. There are two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit, related by a pseudo-inversion center. The direct intermolecular coupling is established by C-H...O, C-H...Cl and C-Cl...Cl(-) interactions. A rare three-center (donor bifurcated) C-H...(O,O) hydrogen bond is observed between the methylene and nitro groups, with a side-on intramolecular component of closed-ring type and a head-on intermolecular component.

C-halogen...pi dimer and C-H...pi interactions in 1-(2-bromo-4,5-dimethoxybenzyl)-2-butyl-4-chloro-1H-imidazole-5-carbaldehyde and 2-butyl-4-chloro-1-(6-methyl-1,3-benzodioxol-5-ylmethyl)-1H-imidazole-5-carbaldehyde.

The structures of the title compounds, C17H20BrClN2O3, (I), and C17H19ClN2O3, (II), are stabilized by intramolecular C-H...O and C-H...pi interactions. The stability of the molecular packing in (I) and (II) arises from a diverse set of weak intermolecular C-H...O, C-H...pi and C-halogen...pi interactions. In the crystal structure of (I), molecules aggregate in dimeric subunits via C-Br...pi interactions. The dimers are interlinked by C-H...O hydrogen bonds. The halogens cluster together and form a channel along the b axis. In (II), the packing is mainly governed by intermolecular C-H...O and C-H...pi interactions.

Trityl losartan.

The title compound (systematic name: [2-butyl-4-chloro-1-[2'-(2-trityl-2H-tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-ylmethyl]-1H-imidazol-5-yl]methanol), C(41)H(37)ClN(6)O, crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P-1 with two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. These molecules differ significantly only in the relative orientations of the rings in the biphenylyltetrazole moieties. One of the molecules shows disorder for three C atoms in the n-butyl group. Hydrogen bonds link the molecules in an infinite chain along the a axis.

Sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of indomethacin in capsules.

A simple, sensitive and selective spectrophotometric method for the determination of indomethacin (INM) either in pure form or in capsules is described. The method is based on the coupling reaction of hydrolyzed INM with diazotized p-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride (PPDD) in sulphuric acid medium to give a red coloured product having the absorption maximum at 510 nm. The product is stable for 20 h. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range of 0.2-10 microg/ml. Results of the proposed method compare favourably with those of the official methods and offer the merits of sensitivity and stability. Common excipients used as additives in pharmaceutical preparations do not interfere in the proposed method.

Copper(II)-catalysed oxidative coupling reaction of 3-hydroxyacetanilide with 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone for the spectrophotometric determination of traces of copper(II).

A spectrophotometric method is developed for the determination of traces of copper(II), based on the catalytic oxidative coupling reaction of 3-hydroxyacetanilide with 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone in the presence of ammonia and hydrochloric acid. Beer's law is obeyed in the copper(II) concentration range of 0.008-0.16 microg mL(-1), and the molar absorptivity at 530 nm is 2.5x10(5) L mol(-1) cm(-1). The Sandell's sensitivity of the product is 0.000254 microg cm(-2). The optimum reaction conditions and other important analytical parameters have been investigated. The proposed method is applied to the analysis of water and soil samples and the results are compared with the literature method.

3-Aminophenol as a novel coupling agent for the spectrophotometric determination of sulfonamide derivatives.

A rapid, simple and sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of some sulfa drugs is described. The method is based on the formation of orange yellow colored azo product by the diazotization of sulfonamides, viz., dapsone (DAP), sulfathiazole (SFT), sulfadiazine (SFD), sulfacetamide (SFA), sulfamethoxazole (SFMx), sulfamerazine (SFMr), sulfaguanidine (SFG) and sulfadimidine (SFDd) followed by a coupling reaction with 3-aminophenol in aqueous medium. Absorbance of the resulting orange yellow product is measured at 460 nm and is stable for 6 days at 27 degrees C. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range of 0.05-8.0 microg/ml at the wavelength of maximum absorption. The method is successfully employed for the determination of sulfonamides in various pharmaceutical preparations and common excipients used as additives in pharmaceuticals do not interfere in the proposed method. Plausible reaction mechanism is proposed for the formation of the azo product.

Novel coupling reagents for the sensitive spectrophotometric determination of nimesulide in pharmaceutical preparations.

Novel coupling reagents are used for the sensitive spectrophotometric determination of nimesulide (NIME) in either pure form or in its pharmaceutical preparations. The methods are based on the diazotisation of reduced NIME, followed by either coupling with alcoholic iminodibenzyl (IDB) in acid medium to give a deep blue coloured product (lambda(max) of 600 nm) or coupling with 3-aminophenol (AP) in acid medium to produce an orange red coloured product (lambda(max) of 470 nm). Both the methods are highly reproducible and have been applied to a wide variety of pharmaceutical preparations and the results compare favourably with the reported method. Common excipients used as additives in pharmaceutical preparations do not interfere in the proposed methods.

Spectrophotometric determination of metronidazole and tinidazole in pharmaceutical preparations.

Sensitive and simple spectrophotometric methods for the determination of metronidazole (MNZ) and tinidazole (TNZ) in either pure form or in its pharmaceutical formulations are described. The first method is based on the interaction of 3-methylbenzothiazolin-2-one hydrazone (MBTH) with MNZ/TNZ (reduced drug) in presence of copper sulphate and pyridine in acidic medium. The resulting yellowish orange products have lambda(max) of 500 and 490 nm, respectively, for MNZ and TNZ and are stable for about 4 h. The second method describes the reaction between reduced diazotised drugs with N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine dihydrochloride (NEDA) in neutral medium to yield pink products which have lambda(max) of 520 and 505 nm, respectively, for MNZ and TNZ, respectively. The products are stable for more than 24 h. Common excipients used as additives in pharmaceutical preparations do not interfere in the proposed method. Both the methods are highly reproducible and have been applied to a wide variety of pharmaceutical preparations and the results compare favourably with those of official methods.

Spectrophotometric methods for the rapid determination of menadione and menadione sodium bisulphite and their application in pharmaceutical preparations.

Two simple, rapid and sensitive spectrophotometric determination of menadione and its sodium bisulphite derivative (MSB) have been carried out. The first method involves the reaction of menadione and its sodium bisulphite derivative with 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone hydrochloride (MBTH) is sodium hydroxide medium to give blue coloured product having maximum absorption at 625 nm and the coloured species is stable for more than 1 h. The Beer's law is obeyed in the range 0.4-16 microg ml(-1). The second method proposes the reaction of menadione and its sodium bisulphite derivative with resorcinol in concentrated sulphuric acid medium to give red coloured product having maximum absorption at 520 nm and is stable for 3 h. The Beer's law was obeyed in the range of 1-24 microg ml(-1). Molar absorptivity for the above two methods were found to be 7.6 x 10(3) and 4.5 x 10(3) l mol(-1) cm(-1), respectively. All the measurements were carried out at room temperature. These two methods have been successfully applied for menadione and its sodium bisulphite derivatives in injections and tablets of pharmaceutical formulations. The results compare favourably with official method.
