[The pulmonary metastasis of a benign meningioma].

We report a 53-year-old man with a solitary pulmonary nodule and signs of disease progression in chest films taken in the last year with lung metastasis from benign meningioma diagnosed by transthoracic puncture and aspiration. The rarity of this condition is discussed along with the need to include it as a differential diagnosis in patients with recurring meningioma even when the primary lesion is benign, given that early surgical resection of the metastasis resolves this complication.

[Metastasis to the penis of pulmonary epidermoid carcinoma].

Presentation of one case of penial metastasis originated in a epidermic-like carcinoma of the lung. In spite of the rich vascularization of this organ penial metastasis are uncommon; prostate, bladder and rectum tumours being the ones which metastatize more often. Lung metastasis are extremely rare, and only one case has been published in the reviewed national literature. Diagnosis must be established by biopsy of the lesion, ruling out any other benign disease. The treatment used is generally palliative, although the options of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are available. Prognosis is, however, very poor and unrelated to the type of treatment applied.

Respiratory function during oxygen administration in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Patient with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can develop respiratory muscle weakness and fatigue. Arterial hypoxemia can predispose to this condition. To assess whether O2 administration improved respiratory muscle function and respiratory pattern in COPD 11 patients with chronic hypoxemia were examined. Each patient was first submitted to respiratory function studies, including lung volumes, in normal and recumbent position, respiratory frequency, Ti/Te, Ti/Tot, maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures (Pimax, Pemax) and arterial gas analysis breathing room air. All these tests were repeated during oxygen Administration through a nasal cannula. The arterial PO2 improved from 50 +/- 7 mmHg to 81 +/- 28 mmHg but the breathing pattern, Pimax and Pemax as well as lung volumes remained unchanged. It is concluded that oxygen, in short term administration, doesn't influence respiratory pattern and muscle function.
