The problem due to alcoholism in adolescents are shown with regard to epidemiology, genetics, transcultural aspects, and the influences of the family and the group of peers. The main aim in this connection is the trial and endeavor to moderate and to cultivate alcohol drinking as an ingredient of our social-cultural life. This is an obligation for the whole society.
The role of alcohol as an "entrance drug" to further addictive substances is described. Thereby the gradual increase of number and strength of drugs merits our special attention. Moreover the fetal alcohol syndrome and its prevention is an especially important point of view.
The preventive and therapeutic strategies should be determined by considering sociobiological factors and the great plasticity of the juvenile individualities causing the type of dealing with the alcohol and drug abuse problems. Already in the elementary school an enlightening and the attitude to drugs and alcohol influencing instruction should be given. Later on the therapeutic ways become more and more complex. Main methods in the efforts against alcoholism should be the suggestion of own decision ability and the induction of ideas of positive life aims and values.
Iron is one of the most important metals for living organisms. There are many different reasons for an iron deficiency, which can lead to an iron deficiency anemia and can be treated by iron-containing drugs. But there are also some reasons leading to an iron overload, which can impair the defense against bacterial infections. An anemia in the course of an infection is usually not a result of iron deficiency but a physiological reaction against the invading microorganisms. A treatment with iron-containing drugs is only indicated in the case of an undoubtedly proven iron deficiency.
To investigate if in children suffering from asthma bronchiale or cerebral attacks and being under special long-term therapy changes in quantity and quality of saliva occure, both groups of probands were examined in comparision to corresponding controls. In both cases pharmaca were given which may influence the functions of vegetative neuralsystem. It was proved that children with asthma had a lower and those with attacks a higher volume of secretion in comparison with the controls. The calcium-concentrations proved to be higher in both treated groups, the magnesiumconcentration only in the anticonoulsive treated group. Plaqueextension, cariesincidence and index of periodontal inflammation was found to be slightly higher than in the controls.
The intention was to determine the diagnostic and prognostic value of differentiating between the cells excreted in the urine. Midstream morning urine specimens of children with untreated urinary tract infection (group AO), with recurrent urinary tract infection in the symptom-free period (group D), of healthy girls (group CW), healthy boys (group CM), of children with acute infections other than urinary tract infections (group B) and with acute urinary tract infections after 8 days of antibiotic therapy (group A8) were examined for number of leucocytes and proportion of granulocytes (PMNL) in percent. There were significant differences in leucocyte numbers between groups D, CW and A8 on the one hand and CM and B on the other The granulocytes percentages differed significantly between AO, D and CW, CM, A8. The study provides essential data for assessing acuity, course and prognosis of urinary tract infection.
