Sanitary significance of fecal streptococci in underground water in Egypt.

Underground water samples taken from 15 wells located at 3 municipal water works in Cairo were examined for the presence of fecal streptococci as a fecal pollution indicator. Fecal streptococci were detected in 96.4% of the 111 representative samples. Ranges of such pollution indicator were 1-17, 1-17 and 1-24 MPN/100 ml for water samples collected from wells in Mustorod, El-Marg and El-Maadi water works, respectively. A total of 200 pure strains of streptococci were isolated and subjected to biochemical and serological tests. Biochemical tests showed that only 26 strains could be classified as related to group D streptococci (enterococcus). Fore further identification, serological test was applied using 48 isolates chosen at random. The distribution of isolates among various serological groups showed that only 15 isolates (31%) could be classified into 5 defined groups (A, B, C, F and G). On the other hand, 4 isolates could not be defined serologically. The remaining 29 isolates (60%) gave a mixed reaction.

Studies of the bacteriological water quality for the intakes of different water treatment plants in greater Cairo.

Water samples from the intakes of 10 water treatment plants at Greater Cairo were bacteriologically tested for total bacterial counts, total coliforms, fecal coliform and fecal streptococci during 1984-1986. The total bacterial count ranged between 10(4)-10(6), 10(3)-10(6), and 10(3)-10(5)/ml during 1984, 85, and 86 respectively. Total coliform density ranged between 0-10(3), 10- greater than 10(4), and 10(2)- greater than 10(4)/100 ml during 1984, 85, and 86 respectively. Although fecal streptococci density does not exceed 10(3)/100 ml in most cases, large numbers of samples are negative for fecal streptococci. By using fecal streptococci as an indicator it is possible to avoid interference between the total bacterial count and coliforms detection. It is important to gain a real judgment about the public health safety by testing the sample for both coliforms and fecal streptococci.

Status of membrane-filter procedure in the examination of water and milk for Staphylococcus aureus.

A comparative study was carried out to assess the performance of four selective media, namely Baird-Parker (B-P), Mannitol-Salt Agar (M.S.A.), Staphylococcus-110 (S-110), and Chapman-Stone (C.S) in solid and liquid forms for recovery of Staphylococcus aureus from water and milk, using membrane filter technique. The descending order of efficiency for demonstrating the presence of inoculated S. aureus from unsterilized Nile water was (B-P)--(M.S.A) + (S-110) and (C.S) medium in solid form and changed to (S-110)--(M.S.A)--(C.S) when used in the liquid form. With sterile Nile water, the descending order of efficiency of the tested media was (B-P) + (M.S.A)--(S-110) and (C.S) medium in the solid form and (M.S.A) + (S-110) and (C.S) in the liquid form. In testing the inoculated milk using solid media, (S-110) and (M.S.A) tend to show similar results and took intermediate position between (B-P) and (C.S). When liquid media were used, the descending order of productivity was (S-110)--(M.S.A) and (C.S).

Boulti (Tilapia nilotica Linn.) fish paste. 1. Preparation and chemical composition.

Boulti fish (Tilapia nilotica Linn.) from Naser's lake in Aswan was converted to a ready marketable product (paste) in aluminium tubes. The quality of the product was ascertained by chemical indices. The product has a good flavour and can be kept for 5 weeks without undesirable changes. It is concluded that the production of fish paste in aluminium tubes is one of the possibilities of converting fish to precooked product.

Direct MPN for faecal coliform.

Samples of Nile and Ismailia canal water were subjected to direct inoculation and incubation at elevated temperatures. The results obtained showed that the use of MacConkey broth medium was better than EC broth. In addition, the Direct MPN technique revealed to be suitable and superior by 90% of the examined samples. A total of 300 isolates was recovered from Direct MPN-technique and identified by using IMViC reactions plus Eijkman test. 96% of the isolates were E. coli proper and 4% irregular types.
